Objectives | |
---|---|
Educational Objectives: expected learning outcomes and competence to be acquired The course aims at recovering the basic chemical knowledge that students should have acquired in high school and on which they were found lacking, based on the results of the entrance test. Knowledge and understanding Ability to understand and formalize simple chemistry concepts. Applying knowledge and understanding Being able to explain the structure of atoms and molecules and the periodic table of elements. Being able to distinguish compounds made up of ions and those made up of molecules, together with their physical and chemical characteristics, in particular of the most common compounds existing in nature, such as water and the constituents of the atmosphere. Knowledge of chemical symbology and of the meaning of chemical formulas and equations. Making judgement Being able to understand which solution approaches to use to solve simple basic chemistry problems. Communication skills Being able to rigorously and effectively explain concepts learned during teaching. Learning skills Being able to develop effective methodologies for learning the fundamental elements of chemistry. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
For a successful achievement of the set objectives, the student is required to have basic chemical knowledge, relating to topics covered in middle school. |
Contents | |
---|---|
Atoms, molecules and ionsAtom and its internal structure: electron, proton and neutron. Isotopes. Periodic tableThe elements of the first two periods and their main characteristics. Chemical formulas Chemical formulas and structural formulas. Water and its propertiesStructure of water, hydrogen bond. Reactivity of water. Water as a solvent of strong electrolytes. Chemical symbols and nomenclatureNomenclature of the main inorganic compounds (salts, oxygenated acids, oxides). Chemical equationsChemical reactions and balancing. Balancing with trial and error method. Analytical balancing of the individual elements. |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
Teaching includes theoretical lessons, during which the topics of the course will be presented through lectures and classroom exercises. The exercises will provide the main tools necessary for solving exercises relating to the contents of the theoretical teaching. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
The exam aims at assessing the knowledge and the ability to understand the concepts presented during the lessons and the ability to apply such knowledge. The exam is divided into two selective written tests, the first in the middle of the course, the second at the end of the course itself. The written tests propose simple exercises based on the topics presented during the lessons. The final evaluation is expressed as “passed / failed”. |
Texts | |
---|---|
Any high-school science/chemistry book that contains the topics described in “Course content”. |
