Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT LEADING STUDENTS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PECULIAR METHODOLOGIES TO THE PALAEOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH; IT SETS OUT ALSO TO REACH COMPETENCES IN THE STUDY OF GREEK MAJUSCULE FORMAL BOOKHANDS (4TH-9TH CENTURIES), OF MINUSCULE BOOKHANDS FROM GREEK-EASTERN AREAS AND FROM HELLENOPHONE SOUTH ITALY (9TH-12TH CENTURIES), SUCH AS OF THE GREEK HANDWRITINGS FROM THE PALAEOLOGAN ERA (13TH-15TH CENTURIES) AND FROM THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE (15TH-16TH CENTURIES).
SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED: READING, DATING AND LOCALIZING BYZANTINE MANUSCRIPTS; FIRST GUIDELINES TO GREEK DOCUMENTARY HANDWRITINGS.
Prerequisites
AN ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF CLASSICAL GREEK IS REQUIRED.

INTRODUCTION TO GREEK PALAEOGRAPHY; HISTORY OF THE GREEK MAJUSCULE SCRIPT, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE GREEK MAJUSCULE FORMAL BOOKHANDS (4TH-9TH CENTURIES); GENESIS OF THE MINUSCULE SCRIPT; GREEK MINUSCULE SCRIPT FROM THE 9TH/10TH CENTURY TO THE 12TH CENTURY (WITH ELEMENTS OF BYZANTINE CHRONOLOGY).
Teaching Methods
THE METHODOLOGIES OF THE PALAEOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH (METHOD OF FORMAL PALAEOGRAPHY) WILL BE USED MATCHED WITH THE CRITERIA OF THE SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION IN THE PHILOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL FIELDS. THE LESSONS WILL INCLUDE BOTH A PART OF THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF DISPLAY FACSIMILES OF HANDWRITINGS.
Verification of learning
LEARNING CHECK DURING THE EXERCISES AND THROUGH A FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION ON THE THEMES OF THE COURSE. THE CRITERIA OF JUDGMENT WILL INCLUDE AN EVALUATION ON THE ACQUIRED LEARNING ABILITIES (READING OF FACSIMILES AND EXPOSURE OF THE PRINCIPAL PALAEOGRAPHICAL THEMES), ON THE EMPLOYMENT OF AN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, AS WELL AS ON THE ABILITY INTO FRAMING THE GRAPHIC PHENOMENON IN ITS CULTURE-HISTORICAL CONTEXT.
