Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS: THE TEACHING AIMS TO PROVIDE A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE LINGUISTIC STRUCTURES OF LATIN (PHONETICS, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX) AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND TEXTS, BOTH IN THE SPECIFICITY OF THEIR FORMAL STRUCTURES AND IN THE ARTICULATED COMPLEXITY OF THE MEANING OF THEIR CONTENTS.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE TEACHING AIMS TO DEVELOP IN STUDENTS THE ABILITY TO TAKE A CRITICAL, HISTORICALLY CONSCIOUS AND SCIENTIFICALLY BASED APPROACH TO VARIOUS LATIN LITERARY TEXTS, THUS HISTORICAL AWARENESS AND THE ABILITY TO ANALYSE ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS AND ASPECTS OF EUROPEAN CIVILIZATION AND CULTURAL HERITAGE, ALSO IN COMPARISON WITH OTHER CULTURES. THESE OBJECTIVES ARE CLOSELY LINKED TO THAT OF DEVELOPING THE ABILITY TO PRESENT ARGUMENTS IN A CLEAR AND EFFECTIVE WAY, AND TO CARRY OUT A COHERENT CRITICAL DISCOURSE.

Prerequisites
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE OF PHONETICS, MORPHOLOGY AND LATIN SYNTAX; GENERAL NOTIONS OF ROMAN HISTORY, WITH PARTICULAR REGARD TO THE RELATIVE CHRONOLOGY AND CONTEXTUALIZATION OF FACTS AND CHARACTERS.

1) SYNTHESIS OF THE HISTORY OF LATIN LITERATURE (FROM THE ORIGINS TO THE 2ND CENTURY A.D.), FOR ASPECTS, THEMES AND GENERAL PROBLEMS. SUMMARY, IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE, OF THE ESSENTIAL NOTIONS OF PHONETICS, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX, PROSODY, METRICS. HINTS ON THE HISTORY OF THE MANUSCRIPT TRADITION OF THE MAIN AUTHORS.

(A) THE STUDY OF AN ORGANIC SYNTHESIS OF THE HISTORY OF LATIN LITERATURE, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE MOST IMPORTANT ARTISTIC PERSONALITIES (ENNIO, NEVIO, LUCILIO, PLAUTO, TERENZIO, CESARE, CICERONE, VARRONE, SALLUSTIO, LUCREZIO, CATULLO, VIRGILIO, ORAZIO, TIBULLO, PROPERZIO, OVIDIO, LIVIO, SENECA, LUCANO, PERSIO, PETRONIO, QUINTILIANO, PLINIO IL VECHIO, VALERIO FLACCO, SILIO ITALICO, STAZIO, MARZIALE, PLINIO IL GIOVANE, GIOVENALE, TACITO, SVETONIO, APULEIO) AND THE HISTORICAL FRAMES OF REFERENCE OF THE VARIOUS PERIODS;
B) A SUMMARY, FOR BROAD LINES (PRINCIPLES OF PHONETICS AND MORPHOLOGY; SYNTAX OF CASES, VERB, PERIOD), OF THE LATIN LANGUAGE;
(C) THE STUDY OF THE CONSTITUENT ELEMENTS OF THE HEXAMETER AND THE ELEGIAC COUPLET;
D) THE STUDY OF ONE OR MORE AUTHORS THROUGH THE STUDY OF CRITICAL ESSAYS, ALSO IN ELECTRONIC FORMAT, DEDICATED TO SINGLE AUTHORS OR SINGLE WORKS.




Teaching Methods
THE TEACHING INVOLVES ALTERNATING FRONTAL LESSONS AND LABORATORY EXERCISES
Verification of learning
1) IN ITINERE, THROUGH DIRECT AND ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT OF STUDENTS DURING LESSONS.
2) ORAL EXAMINATION CONDUCTED THROUGH THE VERIFICATION OF:
A) KNOWLEDGE OF LATIN LITERARY HISTORY, AND IN PARTICULAR THE ABILITY TO IDENTIFY AND PLACE INDIVIDUAL WRITERS IN THE APPROPRIATE CONTEXT, ILLUSTRATING THEIR PERSONAL DATA AND WORKS, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THEIR GENRES, CONTENT AND LINGUISTIC-STYLISTIC FORM;
(B) THE ABILITY TO READ DIRECTLY AND ANALYSE TEXTS, THE CONTENT OF WHICH MUST BE KNOWN AND PROVIDE BASIC RHETORICAL AND LINGUISTIC TRANSLATION AND COMMENTARY, UP TO THE ORGANIC EXPOSITION OF THE AUTHOR'S INTENTIONS.
C) KNOWLEDGE OF THE LATIN LANGUAGE AND ABILITY TO RECOGNISE AND ANALYSE ITS FORMS AND STRUCTURES; POSSESSION OF TECHNICAL LANGUAGE AND RIGOROUS METHODOLOGY; COHERENT EXPOSITION.
