Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO OFFER THE STUDENT A BASIC PREPARATION RELATING TO THE HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD, THROUGH THE MAIN DOCUMENTARY TYPES (ARCHITECTURE, URBAN PLANNING, CERAMICS, PAINTING, SCULPTURE) ATTESTED OVER TIME, WHICH CONTRIBUTE AT THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ANCIENT WORLD.
THE PURPOSE OF THE COURSE IS TO TRANSFER TO THE STUDENT A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DOCUMENTATION OF THE GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD; SPECIFICALLY, THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO:
- WILL KNOW THE METHODOLOGIES FOR IDENTIFYING THE MAIN MATERIAL DOCUMENTS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD IN THEIR HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC CONTEXT;
- WILL KNOW THE METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS TO CORRECTLY INTERPRET THE MAIN TYPES OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DOCUMENTS FROM A CHRONOLOGICAL AND FUNCTIONAL POINT OF VIEW;
- WILL KNOW THE DIACHRONIC DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUES AND STYLES.
- WILL KNOW CULTURAL AND SOCIAL EXPRESSION OF THE GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD.
THE TOOLS PRESENTED IN THE COURSE WILL ALLOW THE STUDENT TO:
- DESCRIBE AND FRAME THE ARTEFACTS CHRONOLOGICALLY AND GEOGRAPHICALLY USING A SCIENTIFICALLY CORRECT LANGUAGE;
- DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO CORRECTLY REFER THE MAIN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DOCUMENTS TO A TOPOGRAPHICAL, CHRONOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT;
- CRITICALLY EXAMINE THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC CONTEXTS.
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO:
- SELECT AND PROCESS THE INFORMATION ACQUIRED FOR THE PURPOSE OF WIDER HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL INTERPRETATIONS.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO HOLD CONVERSATIONS ON WIDE-RANGING TOPICS RELATING TO THE GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD BY MAKING USE OF ADEQUATE SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY AND USEFUL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS, EVEN IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS, BOTH TRADITIONAL AND DIGITAL RESOURCES;
- TO RELATE THE DIFFERENT EXPRESSIONS OF GREEK AND ROMAN CULTURE;
- DEEPEN THE TOPICS COVERED USING DIFFERENT BIBLIOGRAPHIC SOURCES;
- CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ON ARCHAEOLOGICAL DOCUMENTS AND ARTISTIC MANIFESTATIONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD.

BY J.J. WINKELMANN AND THE BIRTH OF THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT ART, TO MODERN ARCHEOLOGY
MODULE I - ARCHEOLOGY AND HISTORY OF GREEK ART (16 HOURS);
THE PROTOGEOMETRIC AGE; THE GEOMETRIC AGE; THE ARCHAIC AGE; THE AGE OF SEVERE STYLE; THE CLASSICAL AGE; THE IV SEC. B.C. AND THE POLIS CRISIS; THE AGE OF ALESSANDRO; HELLENISM AND THE ART OF PERGAMO

MODULE II - ARCHEOLOGY AND HISTORY OF ROMAN ART (12 HOURS)
ROMAN ARCHEOLOGY FROM VIENNESE HISTORICISM TO RECENT TRENDS OF GERMAN AND ITALIAN STUDIES; THE REPUBLICAN AGE; THE AUGUSTAN AND GIULIO-CLAUDIA AGE; NERONE AND THE FLAVIAN AGE; THE TRAIAN AND HADRIAN AGE; FROM THE ANTONINE AGE TO THE LATE EMPIRE

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES THEORETICAL LESSONS DURING WHICH WILL BE EXAMPLE READINGS OF ARCHITECTURAL, SCULPTURAL AND PAINTING ARTIFACTS, COMMENTARY PLANTS AND PLANS, WITH THE AID OF POWER-POINT AND IMAGES THAT WILL CONSTITUTE PART OF THE PROGRAM.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT IS RELIED TO A FINAL ORAL EXAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE WITH THE SUPPORT OF PHOTOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTS (POWER-POINTS AND PLANTS) AND WILL AIM TO VERIFY THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO DESCRIBE AND FRAME THE ANCIENT ARTIFACTS CHRONOLOGICALLY.
WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT:
- THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSURE, IN TERMS OF USE OF APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE
- THE SKILL OF TRANSVERSAL CORRELATION BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT TOPICS OF THE COURSE AND, WHERE POSSIBLE, WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES
- PROVEN AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
