Objectives
THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO MAKE STUDENTS AWARE OF WHAT A LANGUAGE IS, HOW ITS STRUCTURE IS ORGANISED, THE POINTS OF CONTACT AND DIVERGENCE BETWEEN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES GIVING PRIORITY TO THE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF LINGUISTICS AND TO LANGUAGE CHANGE.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL LEARN THE NOTIONS USEFUL FOR ANALYSING AND DESCRIBING LANGUAGES AT DIFFERENT LEVELS (PHONETIC, PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, SYNTACTIC, SEMANTIC) AND FOR UNDERSTANDING THE REASONS FOR AND THE DYNAMICS OF LANGUAGE CHANGE.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- ABILITY TO IDENTIFY PHENOMENA RELEVANT TO LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS AND DESCRIPTION
- ABILITY TO IDENTIFY DISTINCTIVE FEATURES AND COMMON FACTORS AMONG LANGUAGES
- ABILITY TO IDENTIFY RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN LANGUAGES AND CULTURES
- ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE CHANGE AND CONSERVATION OF LANGUAGES

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND EVALUATE AUTONOMOUSLY
- THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATION OF THE PRINCIPLES OF DESCRIPTIVE GRAMMAR
- THE CONSTITUTIVE FEATURES OF LANGUAGES COMPARED TO OTHER COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
- THE FACTORS OF CULTURAL IDENTITY CONVEYED THROUGH LANGUAGES.

COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE, BY MEANS OF TEXTS OR COMPUTER TOOLS, THE MAIN RESULTS OF HISTORICAL AND SYNCHRONIC LINGUISTICS.

LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- IDENTIFY AND USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS AS WELL AS LINGUISTIC ELECTRONIC RESOURCES IN VARIED DIGITAL FORMATS;
- UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE BY CONSULTING TEXTS DEDICATED TO THE SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF LANGUAGES.
Prerequisites
THE GRAMMATICAL SKILLS NORMALLY PROVIDED FOR IN THE SCHOOL CURRICULA, I.E. THE ABILITY TO DISTINGUISH THE DIFFERENT LEXICAL CATEGORIES (NOUNS, VERBS, ADJECTIVES, PREPOSITIONS, ETC.), THE DIFFERENT LOGICAL FUNCTIONS (SUBJECT, PREDICATE, ETC.) AND THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND DESCRIBE THE SYNTACTIC STRUCTURE OF A PERIOD, ARE SUFFICIENT AND NECESSARY CONDITIONS TO ATTEND THE COURSE.
Contents
THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE COVERED DURING THE COURSE:
0) INTRODUCTION TO THEORETICAL AND DESCRIPTIVE LUINGUISTICS
1) THE CLASSIFICATION OF LANGUAGES;
2) THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE INDO-EUROPEAN PHONOLOGICAL SYSTEM;
3) PHONOLOGICAL CHANGE;
4) MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGE;
5) GRAMMATICAL CATEGORIES OF THE INDO-EUROPEAN LANGUAGES;
6) SYNTACTIC CHANGE;
7) EXPLANATIONS OF THE CHANGE.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES AND DATA ANALYSIS SESSIONS.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM AIMS TO ASSESS THE PREPARATION OF THE STUDENT WITH REGARD TO BOTH THE THEORETICAL PART OF THE STUDY PROGRAM AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE CONCEPTS ACQUIRED TO CONCRETE CASES OF LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS. THE VERIFICATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT TAKES PLACE THROUGH A WRITTEN TEST OF ABOUT 20 QUESTIONS, TO BE CARRIED OUT WITHIN 2 HOURS.
THE QUESTIONS CONTAINED IN THE TASK ARE OF A DIFFERENT NATURE: SOME ARE OPEN, OTHERS CLOSED, OTHERS WITH MULTIPLE ANSWERS; SOME OF A THEORETICAL NATURE, OTHERS OF A MORE PRACTICAL NATURE. THE LATTER CONSIST OF ANALYSIS EXERCISES (APPLIED TO DIFFERENT LANGUAGES, IN PARTICULAR THE CLASSICAL LANGUAGES - LATIN AND GREEK) AIMED AT VERIFYING THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO APPLY THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED. THE QUESTIONS CONCERN ALL THE TOPICS THAT ARE PART OF THE PROGRAM, BOTH THOSE DEEPENED DURING THE FRONTAL LESSONS, AND THOSE LEFT TO THE STUDY AND PERSONAL REFLECTION OF THE STUDENT, NAMELY: BASIC NOTIONS OF GENERAL AND HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS, PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY AND LEXICON, SYNTAX, SEMANTICS, PRAGMATICS, COMPARISON AND LINGUISTIC RECONSTRUCTION, LINGUISTIC TYPE, ETC..
THE EVALUATION WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE NUMBER OF CORRECT ANSWERS, WHICH IS ATTRIBUTED A VALUE FROM 1 TO 3 POINTS (THERE ARE NO REDUCTIONS FOR INCORRECT OR BLANK ANSWERS OUT). IN ADDITION TO THE SUBSTANTIAL CORRECTNESS, THE FORMAL SUITABILITY AND EXPRESSIVE CLARITY OF THE ANSWERS WILL ALSO BE A SUBJECT OF EVALUATION. THEREFORE, THOSE WHO EXPRESS AN ORGANIC AND COMPLETE VIEW OF THE THEMES IN THE EXAMINATION PROGRAMME, DEMONSTRATING EXPRESSIVE MASTERY AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGE OF THE SUBJECT, AS WELL AS POSSESSION OF ADEQUATE ANALYTICAL SKILLS, WILL OBTAIN GRADES OF EXCELLENCE. PARTIAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECTS, CORRECT EXPOSURE BUT WITH UNCERTAINTIES IN THE USE OF REFERENCE TERMINOLOGY, AS WELL AS A LESS PRECISE CAPACITY FOR ANALYSIS, WILL LEAD TO DISCREET OR ACCEPTABLE EVALUATIONS. A LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS IN THE PROGRAMME, A PROPERTY OF LANGUAGE THAT IS NOT ADEQUATE AND A LOW PROPENSITY TO ANALYSE WILL LEAD TO EVALUATIONS THAT ARE SUFFICIENT OR SLIGHTLY SUPERIOR TO SUFFICIENCY. RELEVANT GAPS IN BOTH THEORY AND PRACTICE AND INADEQUATE LANGUAGE CAN ONLY BE NEGATIVELY EVALUATED.
