Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL MOMENTS IN THE HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE, FROM THE FIFTH TO THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT
-WILL UNDERSTAND THE FUNDAMENTAL, INSTITUTIONAL, POLITICAL, SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL DYNAMICS OF THE HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE
-WILL ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT IN WHICH THE EUROPEAN STATES ARE BORN IN WHICH THE FOREIGN LANGUAGES STUDIED ARE USED
-WILL KNOW THE BASIC CHARACTERISTICS AND METHODOLOGIES OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH
-WILL ACQUIRE BASIC KNOWLEDGE FOR USING THE CONTENTS OF WEBSITES AND DATABASES RELEVANT TO MEDIEVAL STUDIES
-WILL ACQUIRE BASIC KNOWLEDGE FOR USING THE MAIN BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS RELEVANT TO MEDIEVAL STUDIES

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

-COLLECT, SYSTEMATIZE, PROCESS AND INTERPRET HISTORICAL DATA
-ANALYZE HISTORICAL SITUATIONS TO PLACE LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY PHENOMENA
-ANALYZE HISTORICAL EVENTS WITH AWARENESS, EVEN FROM PERIODS OTHER THAN THE MIDDLE AGES AND CLOSER TO CONTEMPORANEITY

-USE THE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE AS A COMPONENT OF THE ABILITY TO ANALYZE COMPLEX SITUATIONS IN STUDY AND WORK CONTEXTS

Contents
THIS MODULE WILL EXPLORE A PERIOD RANGING FROM THE FIFTH TO THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY THROUGH EXAMINING THE MAIN POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND RELIGIOUS THEMES PERTAINING TO THE MEDIEVAL MILLENNIUM. THE GOAL IS TO GIVE STUDENTS THE TOOLS FOR UNDESTANDTING THE MIDDLE AGES, AS WELL AS THE DOCUMENTARY AND MATERIAL TOOLS FOR ITS STUDY, WITH A SPECIFIC FOCUS ON WESTERN EUROPE AND THE MEDITERRANEAN. AFTER DISCUSSING WHAT DOES MEAN ‘MIDDLE AGES’ IN HISTORICAL RESEARCH AND ITS PERIODISATION, THIS MODULE WILL ANALYSE A SET OF THEMES, AMONG WHICH THE END OF THE ANCIENT WORLD AND THE EMERGENCE OF THE ROMAN-BARBARIAN KINGDOMS; THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE WORLD RELIGION: CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAM, AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS; THE CAROLONGIAN EMPIRE AND ITS CRISIS; THE ECOMOMIC AND SOCIAL STRUCTURES OF THE CENTRAL MIDDLE AGES; THE ESTABLISHMENT OF MONARCHIES AND THE EMERGENCE OF CITIES; THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY CRISIS; ITALY AND EUROPE IN THE LATER MIDDLE AGES. THE THEMATIC SECTIONS OF THIS MODULE WILL FOCUS ON WOMEN IN THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES AND ON THE HISTORY OF MEDITERRANEAN AND SOUTHERN ITALY IN THE LATER MIDDLE AGES
Teaching Methods
THIS MODULE WILL CONSISTS OF 60 HOURS OF CLASSES, INCLUDING SOME MOMENTS TO DEBATE TOGETHER THE MOST IMPORTANT TURNING POINTS OF THE MIDDLE AGES, AS WELL AS TO EXAMINE THE DOCUMENTARY AND MATERIAL SOURCES OF MEDIEVAL RESEARCH
Verification of learning
STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED THROUGH ORAL EXAMINATION. THE LATTER IS A DISCUSSION TO TEST THAT STUDENTS POSSESS SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE ABOUT THIS COURSE’S CONTENTS, NAMELY ON BOTH THE COURSE TEXTBOOK ON EUROPEAN HISTORY BETWEEN THE FIFTH AND THE FIIFTEENTH CENTURY, ON THE BOOK ‘ISTRUZIONI PER L’USO’ AND THE DOCUMENTARY SOURCES THEREIN INCLUDED, AS WELL AS ON THE READINGS LISTED FOR THIS COURSE'S THEMATIC SECTION. THE ASSESSMENT RANGES FROM A MINIMUM OF 18 TO A MAXIMUM OF 30 POINTS, PLUS LAUDE. NOTE THAT THE ASSESSMENT WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT EVENTUAL EXERCISES AND PRESENTATIONS HELD DURING THE SEMESTER.
