Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE A BROAD KNOWLEDGE OF THE LINGUISTIC STRUCTURES OF LATIN (PHONETICS, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX) AND OF LATIN LITERATURE IN ITS HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT.
Prerequisites
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE OF LATIN PHONETICS, MORPHOLOGY AND SYNTAX; GENERAL NOTIONS OF ROMAN HISTORY, WITH PARTICULAR REGARD TO RELATIVE CHRONOLOGY AND CONTEXTUALISATION OF FACTS AND FIGURES.

1) SYNTHESIS OF THE HISTORY OF LATIN LITERATURE (FROM THE ORIGINS TO THE AUGUSTAN AGE), THROUGH AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
A) ORIGINS OF LATIN LITERATURE;
B) PLAUTUS AND TERENCE;
C) LIVIUS ANDRONICUS, NAEVIUS, ENNIUS, LUCILIUS;
D) CATULLUS, LUCRETIUS, CICERO, SALLUST, CAESAR, VARRO;
E) VIRGIL, HORACE;
F) CORNELIUS GALLUS, TIBULLUS, PROPERTIUS, OVID;
G) LIVY
2) SUMMARY, IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE, OF THE ESSENTIAL NOTIONS OF PHONETICS, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX, PROSODY, METRICS. OUTLINE OF THE HISTORY OF THE MANUSCRIPT TRADITION OF THE MAIN AUTHORS.
3) READING, TRANSLATION AND COMMENTARY OF THE FOLLOWING PASSAGES:

THE LECTURES SHOULD BE SUPPLEMENTED WITH:
1) A SUMMARY, IN BROAD OUTLINE (PRINCIPLES OF PHONETICS AND MORPHOLOGY; CASE, VERB, PERIOD SYNTAX), OF THE LATIN LANGUAGE;
2) THE STUDY OF THE CONSTITUENT ELEMENTS OF THE MAIN METRES OF LATIN POETRY.

Verification of learning
VERIFICATION OF LEARNING
1) IN ITINERE, THROUGH PERIODIC LABORATORY ACTIVITIES;
2) FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION, CONDUCTED THROUGH THE EVALUATION OF:
(A) KNOWLEDGE OF LATIN LITERARY HISTORY, AND IN PARTICULAR ABILITY TO IDENTIFY AND PLACE INDIVIDUAL WRITERS IN THE APPROPRIATE CONTEXT, ILLUSTRATING THEIR BIOGRAPHICAL DATA AND WORKS, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THEIR GENRES, CONTENT AND STYLISTIC FORM;
(B) ABILITY TO READ DIRECTLY AND ANALYSE THE TEXTS, OF WHICH THE CONTENT MUST BE KNOWN AND PROVIDE TRANSLATION AND BASIC RHETORICAL AND LINGUISTIC COMMENTARY, UP TO THE ORGANIC EXPOSITION OF THE AUTHOR'S INTENTIONS.
(C) KNOWLEDGE OF THE LATIN LANGUAGE AND ABILITY TO RECOGNISE AND ANALYSE ITS FORMS AND STRUCTURES; POSSESSION OF TECHNICAL LANGUAGE AND RIGOROUS METHODOLOGY; COHERENT EXPOSITION.
