Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE BYZANTINE CIVILISATION, TOGETHER WITH A SHORT INTRODUCTION ON BYZANTINE SOCIETY AND ECONOMY, RELIGION, ORTHODOX WORLD. A SEMINAR FOCUSES ON SOME EPISODES OF THE LATE BYZANTINE HISTORY, WHICH ARE OF INTEREST FOR THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN EASTERN EUROPE, BY READING SELECTED SOURCES IN ITALIAN TRANSLATION.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:
-KNOW THE HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE OF THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE, ITS CULTURE AND RELIGION FOR THE FORMATION OF MODERN EUROPE;
-STUDY THE POLITICAL AND ECCLESIASTICAL INSTITUTIONS OF THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE, ITS SOCIETY, ITS ILLUSTRIOUS PERSONALITIES, ITS CUSTOMS AND ITS LAWS THROUGH THE ECHOES AND PERSISTENCE IN MODERN EUROPEAN SOCIETIES;
-CRITICALLY DETECT THE FORTLEBEN OF BYZANTINE CIVILISATION IN THE POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ASPECTS OF MODERN EUROPE, ESPECIALLY IN THE EASTERN ORTHODOX WORLD (TSARIST EMPIRE AND SLAVIC WORLD), BUT ALSO IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE AND IN MODERN TURKEY;
-UNDERSTAND THE CULTURAL PHENOMENA AND THE SPECIFICITY OF BYZANTINE CIVILISATION (GREEK, ROMAN AND EASTERN ELEMENT) AND THEIR PERPETUATION IN MODERN EUROPEAN SOCIETIES (ESPECIALLY GREECE, SLAVIC EUROPE, TURKEY);
-LEARN AND REFINE THE TECHNIQUES OF ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF HISTORICAL EVENTS, OF CULTURAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC PHENOMENA, OF READING DOCUMENTS, OF UNDERSTANDING THE POLITICAL, CIVIL AND RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS OF BYZANTIUM IN THE LIGHT OF THEIR PERSISTENCE IN MODERN EUROPEAN SOCIETIES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-CRITICALLY INTERPRET THE POLITICAL, CULTURAL AND SOCIAL HISTORY OF MODERN EUROPE THROUGH THE STUDY OF BYZANTINE CIVILISATION AND ITS FORTLEBEN;
-HAVE AN OVERVIEW OF BYZANTINE CIVILISATION AND THE FORMATION OF MODERN EUROPE;
-APPLY THE TOOLS OF HISTORICAL-CULTURAL AND SOCIO-ANTHROPOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION TO BYZANTINE CIVILISATION AND TO THE STATES OF MODERN EUROPE.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-SHOW AUTONOMY OF HISTORIOGRAPHICAL JUDGMENT AND SOCIO-CULTURAL ANALYSIS;
-FILTER AND SIFT THE DATA IN THEIR POSSESSION; ELABORATE REFLECTIONS AND CRITICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN THE VARIOUS SECTORS OF THEIR COMPETENCE;
-SHOW FULL AWARENESS OF THE POSSIBLE SOCIAL AND ETHICAL EFFECTS CONNECTED TO THE EXPRESSION OF THEIR ANALYTICAL AND JUDGMENTAL SKILLS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-COMMUNICATE, WITH CLARITY AND APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, TO SPECIALISTS AND NON-SPECIALISTS, INFORMATION, REFLECTIONS, PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS AND TO TRANSFER THE BAGGAGE OF THE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED DURING THE COURSE;
-RELATE IN DIFFERENT WORK CONTEXTS AND TO MEDIATE WITHIN A WORK GROUP;

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-CONTINUE INDEPENDENTLY IN THEIR STUDYING AND PROFESSIONAL UPDATING, BOTH IN REFERENCE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF UNDERTAKING HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES (1ST LEVEL MASTER OR MA DEGREE), AND WITH RESPECT TO THE NEEDS EMERGING FROM CONTACT WITH THE WORLD OF WORK.

NONE. HOWEVER, IT IS SUGGESTED A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ROMAN AND/OR MEDIAEVAL AND/OR MODERN HISTORY.

Teaching Methods
ORAL EXPOSITION OF THE TOPICS. POWER-POINT PRESENTATION (HISTORICAL, GEOGRAPHICAL AND THEMATIC MAPS ETC.). SPECIFIC HAND-OUT WILL BE PROVIDED TO STUDENTS WHO WILL BE ATTENDING THE COURSE.
Verification of learning
FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION (FULL MARKS: 30/30 WITH HONOURS).
FOR STUDENTS WHO WILL BE ATTENDING THE COURSE: READING OF HISTORICAL SOURCES AND COMMENTARY. GENERAL EXAMINATION ABOUT ASPECTS OF BYZANTINE CIVILISATION, THE ORTHODOX WORLD, BYZANTIUM AND THE BIRTH OF MODERN EASTERN EUROPE.
FOR STUDENTS WHO WON'T BE ATTENDING THE COURSE: GENERAL EXAMINATION ABOUT ASPECTS OF BYZANTINE CIVILISATION, THE ORTHODOX WORLD, BYZANTIUM AND THE BIRTH OF MODERN EASTERN EUROPE, THE SUPPLEMENTARY TEXTS TO BE STUDIED FOR THE PROGRAMME.

IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THE ATTENDANCE AT THE COURSE IN ORDER TO PREPARE THE ORAL EXAMINATION. HAND-OUT WILL BE PROVIDED DURING THE LESSONS.
