Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT THE ACQUISITION OF METHODOLOGIES OF LITERARY CRITICISM AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS IN A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL KNOW
KNOW THE METHODS OF LITERARY CRITICISM
KNOW THE TECHNIQUES OF LITERARY, METRIC-VERSIFICATORY AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS;
KNOW THE HISTORY OF ROMANCE LANGUAGES.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL KNOW HOW TO
-ANALYZE LINGUISTIC DATA FROM A SYNCHRONIC AND DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE;
-TRANSLATE MEDIEVAL ROMANCE TEXTS (FRENCH, OCCITAN OR CASTILIAN) FOLLOWING PHILOLOGICAL TECHNIQUES AND METHODOLOGIES;
-COMPARE THE PHONETIC AND MORPHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES IN A COMPARATIVE WAY;
-COMPARE AND ANALYZE MEDIEVAL LITERARY TEXTS ON THE BASIS OF THE UNITY OF MEDIEVAL LITERATURE;

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
-USE PHILOLOGICAL TOOLS TO FORMULATE HYPOTHESES, RECOGNIZE LOGICAL CONNECTIONS, AND ARGUE ABOUT THE CONTENT AND LANGUAGE OF TEXTS;
-COMPARE AND EVALUATE DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS, DRAWN FROM THE READING OF LITERARY TEXTS, AND DRAW APPROPRIATE CONCLUSIONS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO EXPRESS LITERARY CONTENT IN A NARRATIVE OR SYNTHETIC MANNER IN CRITICAL OR TRANSLATION VERSIONS;

LEARNING SKILLS.
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE METHODOLOGICAL SKILLS OF LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY ANALYSIS OF TEXTS.
Prerequisites
A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LATIN AND GENERAL LINGUISTICS AND/OR GLOTTOLOGY WOULD BE HELPFUL BUT NOT ESSENTIAL.
Contents
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF ROMANCE LANGUAGES AND A SURVEY OF MEDIEVAL ROMANCE LITERATURE WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE LITERARY GENRE OF THE ROMANCE. PHILOLOGICAL AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF SOME OF THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE TEXTS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED IN TWO PATHS: LITERARY (30 H) AND HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC (30 H).
Verification of learning
ATTAINMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAMINATION WITH A GRADE IN THIRTIETHS. THE FINAL EXAM IS ORAL AND INVOLVES THE READING, TRANSLATION AND LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY COMMENTARY OF ONE OR MORE PASSAGES ANALYSED IN CLASS AND CHOSEN BY THE TEACHER. THE STARTING POINT IS THE TEXTUAL AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF A PASSAGE AND THEN A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF OTHER TEXTS, LITERARY GENRES AND CONTEMPORARY LINGUISTIC EXPRESSIONS.
IN ASSESSING BOTH THE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMS, THE FOLLOWING WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT
-KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT MATTER
-ABILITY TO SUMMARISE AND EXPLAIN CLEARLY
-ABILITY TO ANALYSE THE TEXTS FROM A PHILOLOGICAL POINT OF VIEW, PLACING THEM IN A PRECISE HISTORICAL-LITERARY FRAMEWORK.
