Objectives
PROVIDE THE CONCEPTUAL AND ANALYTICAL TOOLS NECESSARY TO FACE THE ANALYSIS OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS AT EACH LEVEL OF ECOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION. TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF CAPACITIES NECESSARY TO DEFINE PRAGMATIC METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES FOR THE STUDY AND MODELING OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AT ANY DEGREE OF COMPLEXITY, INCLUDING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF RESEARCH PROJECTS FROM THE INTERPRETATION CHAMPIONSHIPS, ANY DRAWING.
Prerequisites
KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC AND APPLIED ECOLOGY ARE PARTICULARLY USEFUL TO UNDERSTAND THE TOPICS ADDRESSED, AS WELL AS FUNDAMENTALS FOR DATA ANALYSIS. HOWEVER, THE TEACHING IS STRUCTURED IN A WAY TO ALLOW THE USE OF STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT TRAININGS, WITHOUT HAVING AFFECTING THE LEARNING OF THE CONTENT.

THE COURSE INCLUDES 56 HOURS OF TEACHING, COVERED BY ANSWERING THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
1) WHAT YOU NEED TO ANALYZE;
2) WITH WHAT CONCEPTUAL APPROACHES;
3) WITH WHICH METHODS AND TOOLS;
4) HOW TO PROCESS THE DATA AND INTERPRET THE RESULTS.
THE TEACHING HOURS ARE DIVIDED INTO LESSONS IN THE CLASSROOM (32 HOURS) AND IN GUIDED EXCURSIONS IN THE FIELD AND EXERCISES IN THE CLASSROOM / LABORATORY (24 HOURS). THE LESSONS ARE MAINLY COVERED THROUGH A MAJEUTICAL APPROACH BASED ON COLLECTIVE ANALYSIS AND DIALECTIC COMPARISON OF THE PROPOSED THEMES, ALSO INCLUDING CRITICAL REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE, ANALYSIS OF CASE STUDIES AND DEVELOPMENT MODELS. THE LESSONS ARE SUPPORTED BY THE PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES DURING WHICH STUDENTS HAVE A WAY TO ACQUIRE DIRECT EXPERIENCE OF THE PROPOSED TECHNIQUES AND REFINE THE CONCEPTUAL AND METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS NECESSARY TO FACE THE STUDY OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS.
THE TOPICS ADDRESSED IN THE CLASSROOM LESSONS ARE:
- THE PARADIGM OF COMPLEXITY (3 hours);
- SPACE AND TEMPORAL STAIRS (3 hours);
- THE CONCEPT OF PERCEIVED SCALE (3 hours);
- NATURAL, ANTHROPIZED AND BUILT ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS (3 hours);
- CHARACTERISTICS AND ANALYTICAL TARGETS OF ORGANISMS, POPULATIONS, COMMUNITIES, ECOSYSTEMS AND LANDSCAPES (4 hours);
- RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE THEORY OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS TO FACE THE STUDY OF NATURAL SYSTEMS AND THOSE WITH A STRONG ANTHROPIC IMPACT (4 hours);
- EPISTEMOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO THE ANALYSIS OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS (4 hours);
- DEFINITION OF METHODOLOGICAL STRATEGIES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS: FORMULATION OF HYPOTHESIS, CHOICE OF THE EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH AND OF THE EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN, SAMPLING, DEFINITION OF THE TECHNIQUES FOR ANALYSIS OF ECOLOGICAL DATA (UNIVARIATES, MULTIVARIES, MULTIVARIES OF THE LEADING RESULTS) 4 hours);
- ECOLOGICAL MODELING (4 hours);

THE TOPICS ADDRESSED IN FIELD AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES ARE:
- ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING OF NATURAL, ANTHROPIZED AND BUILT ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, BOTH TERRESTRIAL AND AQUATIC.
IN THIS PHASE ECOLOGICAL, CONCEPTUAL AND MATHEMATICAL MODELS WILL BE ELABORATED, WHICH WILL ALLOW, THROUGH SIMULATIONS, A MORE IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUNCTIONING OF THE PROCESSES STUDIED.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 56 HOURS OF TEACHING (6 CFU) INCLUDING LECTURES IN THE CLASSROOM, GUIDED EXCURSIONS IN THE FIELD AND EXERCISES IN THE LABORATORY. IN PARTICULAR, THERE ARE 32 HOURS OF LECTURES (4 ECTS) AND 24 HOURS OF EDUCATIONAL EXCURSIONS AND EXERCISES IN THE CLASSROOM / LABORATORY (2 ECTS).

THE ATTENDANCE OF THE LESSONS IN THE CLASSROOM IS NOT MANDATORY, THAT OF THE EXERCISES and the activities in the field are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING A PROFIT EXAM, WITH A VOTE EXPRESSED IN THIRTIES, WITH POSSIBLE PRAISE. THE PROFIT EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL TEST OF ABOUT 60 MINUTES AND IS INTENDED TO BE PASSED WITH THE MINIMUM MARK OF 18/30. THE TEST TAKES PLACE IN TWO MOMENTS THAT CONTRIBUTE IN EQUAL MEASURE TO THE DEFINITION OF THE FINAL VOTE:
1) PRESENTATION OF A RESEARCH PROJECT PROPOSED BY THE STUDENT ON THE STUDY OF AN ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM (ABOUT 20 MINUTES);
2) DISCUSSION OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT PRESENTED (ABOUT 40 MINUTES).
THE TEST IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO FACE THE DEFINITION OF AN INNOVATIVE AND EFFECTIVE METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH FOR THE STUDY OF AN ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM AND, TOTALLY, ALLOWS TO ASSESS BOTH THE ABILITY OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING, AS WELL AS THE THE SKILLS ACQUIRED, BOTH THE ABILITY TO LEARN AND TO DEVELOP SOLUTIONS IN AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT.

THE MINIMUM MARK FOR PASSING THE EXAM IS 18/30, AND IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH FOR THE STUDY OF AN ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM.
THE MAXIMUM MARK (30/30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT is able to develop an INNOVATIVE AND EFFECTIVE METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH FOR THE STUDY OF AN ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM

PRAISE MAY BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WHO REACH THE MAXIMUM VOTE OF 30/30 AND WHO PROVE TO BE ABLE TO APPLY AUTONOMY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN THE LESSON
