Objectives
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE FOUNDATION OF THE MAIN PROCESSES OF METEOROLOGY AND OCEANOGRAPHY. ACQUISITION OF ADEQUATE SKILLS ABOUT INSTRUMENTAL TECHNIQUES, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF THE MAIN METEO-MARINE PARAMETERS. CAPABILITY OF ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF CLIMATE CHANGE PROCESSES. ACQUISITION OF SKILL FOR THE EVALUATION AND MITIGATION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF METEO-MARINE EXTREME EVENTS.
Prerequisites
KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS AND CLASSICAL PHYSICS IS REQUIRED.
Contents
THE COURSE PROVIDES THE THEORETICAL BASIS AND PRACTICES OF THE MAIN PROCESSES IN CLIMATOLOGY, METEOROLOGY AND OCEANOGRAPHY, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE ANALYSIS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF METEO-MARINE EVENTS.
THE COURSE INCLUDES 40H (5CFU) OF CLASS LESSONS, 12H (1CFU) OF CLASS EXERCISES WHERE THE STUDENTS MAKE ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF METEO-MARINE TIME SEIRES.
LECTURER SUBJECTS:
1.BASICS OF GEOPHYSICAL FLUID DYNAMICS. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE ATMOSPHERE AND SEA WATER. GENERAL CIRCULATION OF THE ATMOSPHERE AND SEAS (1CFU, 8 ORE).
2.METHODS FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF THE MAIN METEOROLOGICAL PARAMETERS (PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY, WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION, PRECIPITATION, ETC.). METHODS FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF THE MAIN OCEANOGRAPHIC PARAMETERS (SALINITY, DENSITY, OXYGEN, CURRENT, SEA LEVEL, ETC.) (1CFU, 8 ORE).
3.CLIMATIC HYSTORY OF THE EARTH. GLOBAL WARMING. IPCC SCENARIOS. CLIMATIC PROJECTION (1CFU, 8 ORE).
4.THE OCEANS. WAVES AND TSUNAMIS. THERMO-HALINE CURRENTS. FLUID TIDES (1CFU, 8 ORE).
5.AIR AND OCEAN POLLUTION. ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS (1CFU, 8 ORE).
EXERCISES SUBJECTS (1CFU, 12 ORE):
1.METEO-MARINE TIME SERIES ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION. EVALUATION OF THE PROBABILITY OCCURRENCE FOR EXTREME EVENTS
Teaching Methods
LECTURES ON THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE COURSE, CLASSROOM EXERCISES FOR THE ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION
OF MEASURES OF ENVIRONMENTAL PARAMETERS IN THE ATMOSPHERE AND IN THE OCEAN.
ATTENDANCE OF CLASSROOM LESSONS IS NOT OBLIGATORY, THAT OF EXERCISES IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
Verification of learning
THE LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED GETTING THROUGH AN ORAL EXAMINATION. THE EXAMINATION INCLUDES THE DISCUSSION OF A TECHNICAL REPORT ON THE EXERCISES EXPERIMENTS. THE ORAL TEST (ABOUT 40MIN) IS FINALIZED TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING REACHED BY THE STUDENT ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS INDICATED IN THE PROGRAM AND THE VERIFICATION OF CAPABILITY ON THE EVALUATION OF CLIMATE CHANGES EFFECTS AND ON THE MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION ACTIONS. ORAL TEST WILL VERIFY THE COMMUNICATION CAPACITY WITH LANGUAGE PROPERTIES AND AUTONOMOUS ORGANIZATION OF EXPOSURE.
THE MINIMUM EVALUATION LEVEL (18) IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN PROCESSES GOVERNING THE ATMOSPHERE AND THE OCEAN AND SHOWS UNCERTAINTIES IN THE CAPACITY OF EVALUATE THE MAIN EFFECTS OF THE CLIMATE CHANGE AND ON THE ANALYSIS OF CLIMATE RECORDINGS.
THE MAXIMUM LEVEL (30) IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A COMPLETE AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE VARIOUS METEO-CLIMATIC PROCESSES AND IS ABLE TO ADDRESS CORRECTLY THE EVALUATION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS.
THE PRAISE IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS FULL MASTERY OF THEORETICAL AND APPLICATIVE CONTENTS AND HE IS ABLE TO ARGUE WITH LANGUAGE SKILL AND INDEPENDENT PROCESSING CAPACITY.
