Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO GIVE TO THE STUDENTS THE FUNDAMENTALS ON MECHANICS, THERMODYNAMICS AND MEASUREMENT THEORY, THROUGH LESSONS AND LABORATORY EXERCISES.
THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND SOLVE PROBLEMS INVOLVING FORCES, MOTION, ENERGY, HEAT AND TEMPERATURE, AND REALIZE SIMPLE LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS IN MECHANICS AND THERMODYNAMICS USING LABORATORY INSTRUMENTATION AND ANALYZING THE RESULTS USING PHYSICAL MODELS AND STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES.
Prerequisites
IT IS FUNDAMENTAL AND ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF CALCULUS (VECTORS, ELEMENTARY FUNCTIONS, TRIGONOMETRY) AND USEFUL A KNOWLEDGE OF ANALYSIS (DERIVATIVES, INTEGRALS).

-PHYSICAL QUANTITIES AND THEIR DEFINITION IN TERMS OF MEASUREMENT. INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM.
-INTRODUCTION TO ERROR ANALYSIS.
-MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION. KINEMATICS. UNIFORMLY ACCELERATED MOTION.
-CONCEPT OF FORCE. NEWTON'S LAWS. MOTION IN TWO AND THREE DIMENSIONS.
-KINEMATICS AND DYNAMICS OF ROTATIONAL MOTIONS. ANGULAR MOMENTUM.
-WORK AND ENERGY. POTENTIAL ENERGY. CONSERVATION OF ENERGY.
-GRAVITATION.
-WAVES AND OSCILLATORY PHENOMENA.
-TEMPERATURE, MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF GASES. FIRST AND SECOND LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS. THERMODYNAMIC CYCLES.

LABORATORY EXERCISES (1 CFU) (12 HOURS):
-MEASUREMENT OF THE DENSITY OF SOLIDS.
-MEASUREMENT OF THE ELASTIC CONSTANT OF A SPRING.
-MEASUREMENT OF THE HEAT CAPACITY OF SOLIDS.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES ON THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE TEACHING AND CLASS EXERCISES ON APPLICATIONS OF THE CONCEPTS LEARNED.

LABORATORY EXERCISES ORIENTED TO THE MEASUREMENT OF PHYSICAL QUANTITIES.

PRESENCE AT THE LECTURES IN NOT COMPULSORY, WHILE IT IS REQUESTED TO PARTICIPATE TO AT LEAST 2/3 OF THE LABORATORY EXERCISES.
FOR EVERY LABORATORY EXERCISE IS REQUESTED THE PRESENTATION OF A WRITTEN REPORT DESCRIBING OBJECTIVES, METHODOLOGY, EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS USED, DATA COLLECTED AND ANALYSIS PREFORMED.
THE ABSENCES TO LABORATORY EXERCISES CAN BE RECOVERED BY ACCESSING TO THE LABORATORY INDIVIDUALLY.
Verification of learning
TO PASS THE EXAM THE STUDENT MUST PERFORM AT LEAST 2/3 OF THE LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS AND PRODUCE THE TECHNICAL REPORTS.
THE EXAM IS IN WRITTEN AND ORAL FORM.
IN THE WRITTEN TEST THE STUDENT SOLVES PROBLEMS OF MECHANICS AND THERMODYNAMICS.
THE STUDENT THAT REACHES A THRESHOLD OF 18/30 IN THE EVALUATION OF THE WRITTEN TEST CAN PERFORM THE ORAL TEST, IN WHICH HE
- EXPLAINS THE WORK DONE IN THE LABORATORY,
- ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS REGARDING THE SUBJECTS OF THE LECTURES

THE MARK WILL DEPEND ON THE OVERALL EVALUATION OF THE WRITTEN TEST , THE EXPERIMENT REPORTS AND ON THE QUALITY AND COMPLETENESS OF THE ORAL REPORT.

THE MINIMUM LEVEL OF EVALUATION (18) IS ASSIGNED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES UNCERTAINTIES IN EXPLAINING THE TEACHING TOPICS AND IN MASTERING THE EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES USED.
THE MAXIMUM LEVEL (30) IS ASSIGNED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS COVERED AND THE EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES USED.
“CUM LAUDE” IS GIVEN WHEN THE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES SIGNIFICANT MASTERY OF THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND ALSO SHOWS THAT HE IS ABLE TO PRESENT THE TOPICS WITH LANGUAGE AND AUTONOMOUS PROCESSING SKILLS.
