Objectives
THE COURSE DEFINES THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM AND THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE PHYSICAL LAWS THAT GOVERN ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS. BESIDE THTHE EORY LECTURES, THE COURSE OFFERS PRACTICAL LESSON IN THE LAB. THE PROPOSED EXPERIMENTS GIVE THE STUDENTS DIRECT EXPERIENCE OF PHYSICAL PHENOMENA AND TEACH THEM HOW TO MEASURE THE PHYSICAL OBSERVABLES TYPICAL OF ELECTROMAGNETISM.

KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION:

THE COURSE DISCUSSES THE PRINCIPLES OF ELECTROMAGNETISM AND ELECTRICAL CIRCUITRY WITH A GOOD LEVEL OF DETAILS, ONLY LIMITED WITH RESPECT TO TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES OF MATHEMATICAL CALCULUS THAT SOME PARTICULAR CASES AND SOME DETAILS WOULD REQUIRE. THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE A CLEAR KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF ELECTROMAGNETISM, OF THE RELATED PHYSICAL OBSERVABLES AND THE LAWS THAT GOVERN THEM. IN PARTICULAR, THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE STUDENT WILL BE ENRICHED BY THE KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION:
- OF THE LAWS FOR ELECTRICAL AND MAGNETIC OFRCES, IN DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS ALSO RELATED TO APPLICATIONS
- OF THE FOUR MAXWELL EQUATIONS THAT DESCRIBE THE PHYSICS OF ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC FIELDS AND OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES
-OF THE CONTINUITY EQUATION FOR THE DENSITY OF ELECTRIC CHARGE AND CURRENT
-OF THE ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC NATURE OF MATTER WITH SOME REFERENCES TO QUANTUM MECHANICS

FURTHERMORE, THE STUDENT WILL GAIN BOTH THEORY AND PRACTICAL EXPERTISE,VIA LAB EXPERIENCES, OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS, OF ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE, CAPACITANCE, INDUCTION, ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE, VOLTAGE GENERATORS AND OF KIRCHHOFF LAWS.

KNOWLEDGE APPLICATION AND COMPREHENSION:

THE COURSE PROVIDES NOTIONS, CONCEPTS AND METHODOLOGIES NECESSARY TO CORRECTLY COMPREHEND, ANALYZE AND SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS AND ELECTRICAL CURRENTS.
Prerequisites
SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE OF ANALYSIS AND CALCULUS ELEMENTS: VECTORS, FUNCTIONS, DERIVATIVES, INTEGRALS. KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL LAWS OF MECHANICS AND THERMODYNAMICS.

THEORY LECTURES (5 CFU, 50 HOURS):
- CONCEPTS OF FIELDS AND POTENTIALS (10 HOURS)
- ELECTROSTIACS AND MAGNETOSTATICS IN VACUUM (10 HOURS).
- ELECTRIC FIELD IN MATTER: POLARIZATION AND DIELECTRICS, CONDUCTORS (10 HOURS)
- MAGNETIC FIELD IN MATTER AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES (5 HOURS).
- STEADY ELECTRIC CURRENTS, ELECTROMOTIVE FORCES, DC ELECTRIC CIRCUITS, KIRCHHOFF LAWS (5 HOURS)
- GENERAL LAWS OF INDUCTION AND TIME VARYING FIELDS (5 HOURS)
-MAXWELL EQUATIONS AND WAVE EQUATIONS. WAVES AND THEIR PROPAGATION. ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM (5 HOURS).

LAB EXPERIENCES (1 CFU, 12 HOURS):
-THREE EXPERIMENTS ON DC AND AC ELECTRIC CIRCUITS (12 HOURS).
Teaching Methods
ATTENDANCE OF THE THEORY LECTURES IS NOT MANDATORY BUT HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. IT IS INSTEAD MANDATARY TO ATTEND AT LEAST 2/3 OF THE LAB EXPERIENCES.

LECTURES ON THE THEORY ASPECTS OF THE COURSE. EXERCISES ON APPLICATIONS AND PROBLEMS CONCERNING THE CONCEPTS DISCUSSED IN THE THEORY LECTURES
(1+1 CFU)
LAB EXPERIENCES AIMED AT MEASURING PHYSICAL OBSERVABLES.
Verification of learning
TO TAKE THE EXAM IT IS NECESSARY TO HAVE ATTENDED THE LAB EXPERIENCES AND HANDED THE TECHNICAL REPORTS. THE EXAM CONSISTS IN A WRITTEN AND ORAL PARTS. IN THE WRITTEN PART THE STUDENT
- WILL SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO ELECTROMAGNETISM AND ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS.
WITH A GRADE OF 18/30 THE STUDENT CAN TAKE THE ORAL EXAM IN WHICH THE STUDENT WILL
- DISCUSS THE LAB EXPERIENCE
- ANSWER QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE THEORY LECTURES.

THE FINAL GRADE WILL DEPEND ON THE QUALITY OF THE WRITTEN EXAM, THE LAB REPORTS, AND THE CLARITY AND QUALITY OF THE ORAL EXAM.
THE MINIMAL GRADE OF 18/30 WILL BE ACHIEVED IF THE STUDENT SHOWS SOME UNCERTAINTY AND/OR DOES NOT DEMONSTRATE TO MASTER THE SUBJECTS OF THE COURSE, EVEN THOUGH HE/SHE SHOWS TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF PHYSICAL LAWS AND ELECTROMAGNETIC OBSERVABLES.
THE MAXIMUM GRADE OF 30/30 IS RESERVED TO STUDENTS WHO PASS THE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMS, AS WELL AS THE LAB EXPERIENCES, WITHOUT ANY MISTAKE AND DEMONSTRATING TO HAVE CLEAR IN MIND ALL THE CONCEPTS DISCUSSED DURING THE LECTURES. THE CUM LAUDE WILL BE RESERVED TO THOSE WHO DEMONSTRATE ADDITIONAL ELABORATION AND FULL MASTERING OF THE COURSE SUBJECTS
