Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF CARTOGRAPHY, GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND REMOTE SENSING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PURPOSES; THE COURSE ALSO AIMS TO PROVIDE AN INTRODUCTION TO NATURAL (SEISMIC AND VOLCANIC) HAZARDS, THEIR IMPACTS AND CONSEQUENCES, AND THE EARTH PROCESSES THAT UNDERPIN THEM. THE COURSE INCLUDES TWO PARTS: "CARTOGRAFIA E TELERILEVAMENTO" (CARTOGRAPHY AND REMOTE SENSING) AND "GEORISCHI" (GEOHAZARDS).

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (FIRST MODULE):

- CLASSICAL AND NUMERICAL CARTOGRAPHY, REFERENCE SYSTEMS AND CARTOGRAPHIC PROJECTIONS USED IN DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL MAPS;
- DIGITAL TERRAIN MODELS;
- GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEMS;
- DATA MODELING, FUNCTIONS AND TOOLS OF A GIS;
- FEATURES OF REMOTE SENSING IMAGES, SPECTRAL SIGNATURES AND MULTISPECTRAL TECHNIQUES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS;
- CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES RELATED TO THE USE OF GEOGRAPHIC DATA AND REMOTE SENSING IMAGES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MAPPING AND MONITORING;
- CAPABILITY TO UNDERSTAND INFORMATION GIVEN BY CARTOGRAPHIC PRODUCTS AND THEMATIC MAPS.

- AIMS AND LIMITS OF THE STATISTICAL APPROACH TO NATURAL HAZARDS;
- DETERMINISTIC AND PROBABISLISTIC SEISMIC HAZARD APPROACHES;
- ORIGIN OF EARTHQUAKES AND ITALIAN SEISMICITY;
- ITALIAN SEISMIC HAZARD, SEISMIC WAVE AMPLIFICATION, SEISMIC MICROZONING;
- EARTHQUAKE HAZARD MITIGATION STRATEGIES;
- ORIGIN OF ITALIAN VOLCANISM;
- ERUPTION PRECURSORS AND FORECASTING;
- VOLCANIC HAZARD MITIGATION STRATEGIES.

TRANSFERABLE SKILLS (FIRST MODULE):

- USING CLASSICAL AND NUMERICAL CARTOGRAPHIC PRODUCTS, BOTH DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL;
- MANIPULATING AND ANALYZING GEOGRAPHICAL DATA AND USING GIS SOFTWARE;
- USING REMOTE SENSING IMAGES;
- PRODUCING REPORTS AND THEMATIC MAPS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MAPPING AND MONITORING.

TRANSFERABLE SKILLS (SECOND MODULE):

- RECURRENCE INTERVAL ESTIMATE FROM CATALOGUES AND ITS USE FOR HAZARD ESTIMATION;
- SEMI-QUANTITATIVE ESTIMATE OF SEISMIC WAVE AMPLIFICATION;
- USE OF THE GUTENBERG-RICHTER LAW AND ATTENUATION LAWS FOR EARTHQUAKE HAZARD;
- ESTIMATE DISPERSAL AND FRAGMENTATION INDEXES AFTER EXPLOSIVE ERUPTIONS.

BRIEF RESTUDYING OF STATISTICS. HAZARD AND RISK. BERNOULLI AND POISSON MODELS FOR HAZARD ESTIMATIONS.
STRESS. PRINCIPAL STRESSES AND TECTONIC REGIME. SEISMIC WAVES. DETERMINATION OF EARTHQUAKE FAULT PLANES. EARTHQUAKE LOCALIZATION. MAGNITUDE, SEISMIC MOMENT. EARTHQUAKE MONITORING.
LOCAL SEISMIC RESPONSE. SEISMIC HAZARD IN ITALY. DETERMINISTIC SEISMIC HAZARD APPROACH.
FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICAL VOLCANOLOGY. VOLCANO MONITORING. MODELS OF VOLCANO EXPLOSIONS. VOLCANIC HAZARD IN CAMPANIA.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES (80 HOURS, 10 ECTS), PRACTICALS (24 HOURS, 2 ECTS). STUDENTS SERVE THEIR INTERESTS BEST BY REGULAR ATTENDANCE.
