Objectives
AT THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO DEFINE THE GREEN CHEMISTRY AND ITS 12 PRINCIPLES, AS WELL AS THE IDENTIFICATION AND THE USE OF ALTERNATIVE RENEWABLE RAW MATERIALS, REAGENTS, SOLVENTS, AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY CATALYSTS AND FINALLY WILL BE ABLE TO ILLUSTRATE REAL EXAMPLES OF SUCCESSFUL SUSTAINABLE CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGIES. THEY WILL POSSESS THE NECESSARY TOOLS TO ASSESS THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE PROCESSES AND PROPOSE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVES. IN ADDITION, SPECIAL EMPHASIS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN PROCESSES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ENERGY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES AND BIOMASS.

12 PRINCIPLES OF GREEN CHEMISTRY (2 HOURS).
THE CONCEPT OF PERSISTENCE AND THE ESTIMATION OF THE LIFE TIME OF AN ORGANIC COMPOUND IN THE ENVIRONMENT. DEGRADATION REACTIONS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS IN THE ENVIRONMENT: REACTIONS OF OXIDATION, REDUCTION, ABIOTIC HYDROLYSIS AND MICROORGANISM-PROMOTED HYDROLYSIS.
SOURCES AND FATE OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF ORGANIC POLLUTANTS: ALIPHATIC AND AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS, AROMATIC HALIDES, SURFACTANTS AND PESTICIDES (3 HOURS).

SUSTAINABILITY ETHICS SUSTAINABILITY: DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CIRCULAR AND LINEAR ECONOMY.
ATOM ECONOMY AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT EQUATIONS (4 HOURS).

ALTERNATIVE SOLVENTS FOR SUSTAINABLE CHEMISTRY. SOLVENTLESS REACTIONS. THE CLASSES OF GREEN SOLVENTS: WATER, IONIC LIQUIDS, BIPHASIC SYSTEMS WITH FLUORINATED SOLVENTS, SUPERCRITICAL FLUIDS (5 HOURS).

WASTE/POLLUTION PREVENTION/TOXIC METALS (2 HOURS).

SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE TO PHOSGENE: PREPARATION OF POLYURETHANE, ISOCYANATE, POLYCARBONATES, (2 HOURS).

DIOXINS AND FURANS: DEFINITION, STRUCTURES, NOMENCLATURE AND THEIR EFFECTS ON HUMAN HEALTH AND AS ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS. IPA, EFINITION, STRUCTURES, NOMENCLATURE AND THEIR EFFECTS ON HUMAN HEALTH AND AS ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS. EFFECTS ON AHR BIOLOGICAL RECEPTOR. (4 HOURS)

THE REACH REGULATIONS AND THE ECHA AGENCY (4 HOURS).

CATALYST: HETEROGENEOUS AND HOMOGENEOUS CATALYSIS. CATALYSTS FOR OXIDATION AND REDUCTION REACTIONS. (2 HOURS)

STARTING MATERIALS FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES FOR THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY. THE CONCEPT OF BIOREFINERY. CARBOHYDRATES AS FEEDSTOCKS FOR THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY. LIPIDS AS FEEDSTOCKS FOR THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY. POLYMERS FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES (3 HOURS).

BIO-BASED PLATFORM CHEMICALS: LACTIC ACID, 3-HYDROXYPROPANOIC ACID, SUCCINIC AND FUMARIC ACIDS, LEVULINIC ACID, HYDROXYMETHYL FURFURAL (3 HOURS).

ALTERNATIVE CHEMICAL ENERGIES: BIOFUELS, BIOMASS, FUEL CELLS, HYDROGEN (4 HOURS).

SYNTHETIC METHODS AND REAGENTS FOR SUSTAINABLE CHEMISTRY. EXAMPLES OF "GREEN" INNOVATIVE SYNTHESES (1 HOURS).

LABORATORY COURSE (12 HOURS).

TEACHING METHODS.
THEORETICAL LESSONS. PC AND PROJECTOR
THE COURSE COMPRISE TEACHING LESSONS (48 H) AND 12 H OF LABORATORY.
ATTENDANCE OF LESSONS IN THE CLASSROOM IS NOT MANDATORY, THAT OF PRACTICAL EXERCISES IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
Verification of learning
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN ORAL EXAM. THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS INDICATED IN THE TEACHING PROGRAM AND IS INTENDED TO ASCERTAIN THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT AS WELL AS TO VERIFY THE EXPOSURE CAPACITY USING THE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ORGANIZE THE DISCUSSION.
TO REACH THE MINIMUM SCORE OF 18 THE CANDIDATE MUST BE ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF CHEMICAL SYMBOLOGY AND THE STRUCTURES OF THE MOLECULES DISCUSSED IN CLASS, AND GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE 12 PRINCIPLES OF GREEN CHEMISTRY.
THE MAXIMUM GRADE (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRINCIPLES OF GREEN CHEMISTRY, OF THE CHEMICAL PROCESSES FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF NEW MOLECULES FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES, AND A FULL KNOWLEDGE OF TERMINOLOGY AND CHEMICAL STRUCTURES.

HONOURS MAY BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO REACH A MAXIMUM MARK OF 30/30 AND WHO DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO APPLY INDEPENDENTLY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN CLASS.
