Objectives
Knowledge and understanding: To develope knowledge and understanding of pathologic processes, in particular the modifications of structure and functions induced by pathologic stimuli in cells and tissues. In this area of interest the course will focus on the understanding of basic mechanisms of inflammation, immunologic response, neoplastic transformation.
Application of knowledge and understanding: To promote student capability to use acquired knowledge for the comprehension of biologic and pathologic issues so that, finally, the student will be able to expand and expose the arguments of interest. To develop student capability to study in a critic manner e to enrich his judgement capability.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of biochemistry, histology, cell and molecular biology
Contents
CELL PATHOLOGY: CELL DAMAGE AND CELL DEATH; CELL ADAPTATION AND SENESCENCE (6H). ACUTE AND CRONIC INFLAMMATION, TISSUE REPAIR (12H). IMMUNOPATHOLOGY: HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTIONS, AUTOIMMUNITY, IMMUNODEFICIENCY (18H). ONCOLOGY: TUMOR NOMENCLATURE AND CLASSIFICATION, GRADING AND STAGING, EPIDEMIOLOGY, ONCOGENES AND ONCOSUPPRESSOR GENES, INVASION AND METASTASIS, TUMOR VIRUSES (10H).

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS IN LECTURES (7CFU, 56 HS) AND EXRCISE (1CFU, 12HS) IN THE CLASSROOM AND INCLUDE THE USE OF SLIDES.
Verification of learning
The achievement of the objectives is assessed by a written examination, consisting in 4 questions on the course contents, to be answered within 90 min. The student will be evaluated on the basis of the level of knowledge acquired on the main arguments of the course and for the ability to expose them in a correct and complete manner.
