Objectives
The training objectives aim at the acquisition of knowledge relating to:
- the use of the main energy substrates used by skeletal muscle in humans in relation to
to the different types of physical activity;
- the energy mechanisms involved in the synthesis of ATP in anaerobic and aerobic conditions and the
their energy balance, with particular regard to the metabolism of glycogen, lactate, acids
fats and amino acids;
- regulation of the main metabolic pathways involved in the energy mechanisms of the muscle
skeleton in a state of rest and during physical activity;
- skeletal muscle as an endocrine organ, myokines and skeletal muscle communication
with other tissues during exercise.
Knowledge and understanding:
- of the main energy substrates used by skeletal muscle in humans in relation to the different ones
types of physical activity;
- reactions and biochemical processes involved in the use of glucose, fatty acids and amino acids
- metabolism of glycogen, lactate and use of fatty acids and amino acids
- this knowledge will allow the understanding of the energetic mechanisms activated in the muscle
skeleton during physical activity, and related to sports performance.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
Autonomy of judgment:
- autonomous evaluation of the importance and role of the use of energy substrates and them
involvement in the energy mechanisms of ATP synthesis;
- involvement of biochemical processes activated in skeletal muscle depending on the type of
physical exercise (intensity and duration);
- use of the acquired knowledge in the critical evaluation of studies and / or articles on topics
in the motor-sports field.
Communication skills:
the student will have acquired communication skills that will allow him to:
- to support and participate in discussions on biochemical aspects involved in issues in the context of
motor science;
- to expose concepts and biochemical knowledge at the basis of the energetic mechanisms activated in
skeletal muscle during exercise using appropriate scientific terminology.
Prerequisites
Prerequisites: basic knowledge of human biochemistry, on the structure and function of biomolecules
and main metabolic pathways acquired in the three-year degree course.
Contents
The contents of the course concern:
- the energy mechanisms underlying muscle contraction;
- the energy substrates and metabolic pathways activated in skeletal muscle during physical activity;
- energy mechanisms related to sports performance.
Teaching Methods
The course includes lectures (36 hours). In frontal lessons
the topics of the program will be treated, highlighting the conceptual aspects, the knowledge
structural and functional fundamentals, as well as their correlation. Students can take advantage of
an electronic version of the didactic material used in the lectures, which will be provided by
professor.
- Reading and commenting on scientific articles on basic and applicative aspects of Biochemistry del
Movement and Sports Performance in the motor-sports field.
Verification of learning
Learning assessment procedures: carrying out 3 tests to verify the knowledge of
which: the first at the beginning of the course, concerning the previous knowledge of Human Biochemistry; the second
and the third, respectively, at the middle and at the end of the course, on the topics of the program covered in class. The
written tests consist of 20 multiple choice questions; the teacher reserves the right to
reshape the number of questions based on students' needs.
