Objectives
THE MAIN GOAL OF THIS TEACHING IS TO PROMOTE THE ABILITY OF ARRIVING TO REASONED AND CRITICALLY AWARE CHOICES, THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ABILITY OF ANALYSING AND JUDGING MORAL ISSUES. THIS ABILITY IS DEVELOPED THROUGH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAJOR MORAL THEORIES WITH A PARTICULAR INTEREST FOR ETHICAL PROBLEMS IN EDUCATION.
LEARNING OUTCOME:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THIS TEACHING AIMS AT PROVIDING KNOWLEDGE ABOUT MORAL CONTEMPORARY REFLECTION CONSIDERING NOT ONLY MORAL PHILOSOPHY, BUT ALSO ITS DIALOGUE WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES, IN ORDER OF OFFERING THE ANALYSIS OF ISSUES WHICH ARE PARTICULARLY INTERESTING FOR STUDENTS IN EDUCATION.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS LEARN TO APPLY THE CENTRAL CONCEPTS OF ETHICAL CONTEMPORARY REFLECTION TO EDUCATIONAL PROBLEMS, FOR INSTANCE TO APPLY THE DEBATES ON FATHERHOOD, AND MORE GENERALLY ON PARENTHOOD, AS KEY ELEMENTS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES AND OF THE INDIVIDUAL GROWTH.
Prerequisites
NONE. IT IS USEFUL, YET NOT STRICTLY REQUIRED, TO HAVE ALREADY ATTENDED THE COURSES ON PHILOSOPHICAL TOPICS OF THE FIRST AND SECOND YEAR.

TITLE: THE FATHERLESS SOCIETY: FROM FREUD TO PRESENT-DAY DEBATES
THE COURSE PROVIDES KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE CONTEMPORARY DEBATES ON FATHERHOOD AND MORE GENERALLY PARENTHOOD, AN ISSUE WHICH WILL BE CONSIDERED NOT ONLY FROM A PHILOSOPHICAL POINT OF VIEW, BUT ALSO STARTING FROM THE IDEAS THAT WERE INTRODUCED AND DISCUSSED BY PSYCHO-ANALYSIS.

IN THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE, EMPHASIS WILL BE PUT ON SOME CRUCIAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN PSYCHOANALYTIC ETHICS AND PHILOSOPHICAL REFLECTIONS ON MORAL LIFE DATING FROM THE END OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. IN THE SECOND HALF, ATTENTION WILL BE PAYED TO THE GREAT DEBATE ABOUT THE ROLE OF THE FATHER IN MODERN SOCIETIES THAT TOOK PLACE AFTER WORLD WAR II.

2)THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF FREUDIAN PSYCHOANALYSIS
3)CONNECTIONS WITH NINETEENTH CENTURY PHILOSOPHY
4)FREUD’S NOTION OF FATHERHOOD AS AUTHORITY TOUT COURT
5)EARLY DEBATES IN FREUD’S CIRCLE

TOPICS OF THE SECOND PART:
1)THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENTS AFTER FREUD
2)CONNECTIONS WITH SOME TRENDS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES DURING THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
3)THE QUESTION OF FATHERHOOD IN LACAN’S THEORY (INTRODUCTION)
4)CURRENT DEBATES ABOUT THE SO-CALLED “EVAPORATION OF THE FATHER”

PEOPLE WHO CANNOT ATTEND THE COURSE CAN LEARN ABOUT THESE TOPICS BY CAREFULLY READING AND STUDYING THE INTRODUCTION TO FEDERN’S BOOK AND THE INTRODUCTION TO FREUD’S PSYCHOLOGY OF MASSES

Teaching Methods
TEACHING USES THE FOLLOWING METHODOLOGIES:
-LESSONS WITH WIDE CONTENTS, WITH A FINAL DISCUSSION ON THE CENTRAL TOPICS OF THE LESSON.
-READING OF TEXTS, WITH THEIR ANALYSIS AND THE DISCUSSION BY THE WHOLE CLASS.
Verification of learning
ORAL EXAM

THE EXAM CONSISTS OF 3-4 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS CONCERNING THE TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THE CLASS AND/OR IN THE BOOKS THAT STUDENTS MUST STUDY IN ORDER TO PASS THE EXAM. IN PARTICULAR, THE EXAM IS AIMED AT CHECKING THE CAPACITY TO DEVELOP CRITICAL REASONING ON ETHICAL ISSUES REGARDING THE MEANING OF AUTHORITY IN MODERN SOCIETIES AND WITHIN AN EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT, STARTING FROM THE ANALYSES DEVELOPED BY CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHERS AND SOCIAL SCIENTISTS.

THERE WILL NOT BE ANY PRE-EXAMS.
