Objectives
TO HELP STUDENTS TO IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE SKILLS IN ENGLISH DEVELOPING INTERMEDIATE LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE (AT LEAST LEVEL A2 OF THE EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES DESIGNED BY THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE).
TO OFFER STUDENTS APPROACHES AND STRATEGIES STRICTLY RELATED TO EDUCATIONAL AND SEMI-SPECIALIZED ISSUES AND TEXTS.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND USE SELF-CONFIDENTLY EVERYDAY EXPRESSIONS AND SEMI-SPECIALIZED TERMS RELATED TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES.

2. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND EDUCATIONAL AND SEMI-SPECIALIZED TEXTS ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE, ENGLISH LINGUISTICS AND SPECIALIZED ENGLISH LANGUAGES.

- THE NATURE OF LANGUAGE.
- PHONETIC, MORPHOLOGICAL (WORD FORMATION PROCESSES), LEXICAL, SYNTACTIC, SEMANTIC, PRAGMATIC (SPEECH ACT THEORY) AND SOCIOLINGUISTIC (LANGUAGE VARIETIES, REGISTERS AND STYLES) FEATURES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
- LANGUAGE AS CULTURAL MEDIATION OF TEXTUAL AND EXTRA-TEXTUAL MEANINGS. COMPREHENSION OF SPECIALIZED TEXTS FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES.
- THE READING PROCESS AS A DYNAMIC INTERACTION BETWEEN READER, TEXT AND REFERENCE CULTURE.
- READING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES. TEXTUAL CONVENTIONS, RHETORICAL STRUCTURE OF TEXTS AND TEXT TYPES.

Verification of learning
- A WRITTEN EXAM (TIME ALLOWED: 1 HOUR) TO BE TAKEN ON A COMPUTER AND INCLUDING MULTIPLE CHOICE EXERCISES, READING COMPREHENSION, TEXT COMPLETION AND TRANSFORMATION.
- AN ORAL EXAM (TIME ALLOWED: 15-20 MINUTES) CONSISTING IN A GENERAL CONVERSATION IN ENGLISH AND IN THE DISCUSSION OF THE COURSE CONTENTS (LECTURES AND SEMINARS).
