Objectives
THE AIM OF THIS COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE APPROPRIATE TOOLS TO ACQUIRE A LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE IN SPANISH MAPPED AT LEAST AT THE A2-B1 LEVEL OF THE EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES. THE COURSE INTENDS TO DEVELOP THE FOUR BASIC SKILLS WITH AN INTEGRATED APPROACH (READING AND LISTENING COMPREHENSION PLUS WRITING AND SPEAKING PRODUCTION), AND TO BUILD A GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH BY PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH THE PHONETIC, GRAMMATICAL, LEXICAL AND NOTIO-FUNCTIONAL RESOURCES OF THE LANGUAGE.

THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ AND UNDERSTAND THE PROPOSED TEXTS, AS WELL AS USE SENTENCES AND EXPRESSIONS OF COMMON USAGE. S/HE SHOULD ALSO PROVE TO BE ABLE TO MAKE BRIEF SUMMARIES OF TOPICS SUGGESTED FOR DISCUSSION. SPECIALIZED TERMINOLOGY FOR STUDENTS OF POLITICAL SCIENCE WILL BE INTRODUCED THROUGH READING AND ANALYZING PIECES OF NEWS FROM SPANISH PRESS (WITH PRIORITY GIVEN TO TEXTS DEALING WITH POLITICS AND INSTITUTIONAL TOPICS). DURING THE COURSE, DIVERSE AUTHENTIC MATERIALS WILL BE PRESENTED IN ORDER TO BROADEN THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CULTURE AND LANGUAGE OF SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO: 1) READ AND UNDERSTAND THE TEXTS S/HE STUDIED; 2) USE PHRASES AND EXPRESSIONS OF FREQUENT USE; 3) GENERATE BRIEF SUMMARIES OF GIVEN TOPICS.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE LANGUAGE ACTIVELY, ALSO BY REFLECTING ON ITS FORMAL STRUCTURE IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF IT.
JUDGEMENT
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT SHOULD HAVE: 1) ACQUIRED A GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH LANGUAGE SUITABLE FOR A CEFR A2-B1 LEVEL; BUILT A GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF HISPANIC CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO: 1) HOLD A CONVERSATION IN SPANISH ON GENERAL THEMES; 2) GIVE OPINIONS AND DESCRIBE PEOPLE, THINGS, PLACES, ETC; 3) READ AND UNDERSTAND TEXTS IN THE SPANISH LANGUAGE; 4) RECOGNISE THE FORMAL ELEMENTS THAT MAKE UP THE GRAMMAR SYSTEM OF SPANISH LANGUAGE.
LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO: 1) USE THE LANGUAGE AS A MEANS OF COMMUNICATION; 2) USE FORMAL ELEMENTS PROPERLY.

Teaching Methods
FACE-TO-FACE LESSONS — 40 HOURS. CLASSES WILL BE TAUGHT IN SPANISH.
THE ATTENDANCE OF THE COURSE IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED.
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL PART. PASSING THE WRITTEN PART ENTITLES STUDENTS TO SIT THE ORAL PART. STUDENTS OF THE COURSE SHOULD ACQUIRE LEVEL A2-B1 OF LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE IN SPANISH, ACCORDING TO THE EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES.

STUDENTS ARE REMINDED THAT THEY CAN SIT THE WRITTEN PART OF THE EXAMINATION UP TO A MAXIMUM OF TWO TIMES DURING THE ORDINARY EXAM SESSIONS (SUMMER AND AUTUMN SESSIONS) AND UP A MAXIMUM OF ONE TIME DURING THE WINTER EXTRA EXAM SESSION. EXAMINATION FAILURE DURING A SESSION RESULTS IN INELIGIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO RE-SIT EITHER THE WRITTEN OR THE ORAL PART OF THE SAME EXAMINATION DURING THAT SESSION. SITTING TWO EXAMINATIONS PERTAINING TO COURSES OF DIFFERENT LEVELS DURING THE SAME SESSION IS FORBIDDEN.
