Objectives
INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO CONCEPTS AND MODERN TECHNIQUES OF SPATIAL ANALYSIS AND DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS IN UNDERSTANDING AND USING THE GIS TECHNIQUE (GEOGRAGHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM) AS AN UP TO DATE TOOL FOR TERRITORIAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL LEARN CHARACTERISTICS AND PROBLEMS OF TERRITORIAL ANALYSIS, FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE PROCESSING OF SPATIAL DATA AND THEIR ANALYSIS AND REPRESENTATION, AND HE WILL UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE AND THE KEY ROLE OF GIS TECHNOLOGY IN THE PROCESSES OF TERRITORIAL PLANNING.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL HAVE ACQUIRED THE BASIC CONCEPTS AND THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE FOR OPERATIONAL USE OF BASIC GIS TOOLS AND IN PARTICULAR MUST HAVE A GOOD ABILITY TO:
-ACQUIRE, ORGANIZE AND PROCESS GEOGRAPHIC DATA FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES,
-PRACTICALLY EXPLORE THE FUNCTIONS AND METHODS OF SPATIAL ANALYSIS OF GIS,
-PRODUCE THEMATIC MAPS AND OTHER ARTIFACTS THAT ARE USABLE IN THE PRACTICE OF PLANNING AND SPATIAL PLANNING

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT SHOULD HAVE A GOOD CAPACITY TO ANALYZE AND INTERPRET CRITICALLY, ORGANIZATIONAL METHODS AND PROCESSES OF LAND TRANSFORMATION THROUGH A VISUAL APPROACH.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO PRESENT AND COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY THE RESULTS THAT MAY BE ACHIEVED THROUGH GIS TECHNOLOGIES, THROUGH A VISUAL APPROACH SHOWING THE POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS OF THESE INSTRUMENTS.

EARNING ABILITY OF THE STUDENT WILL BE TESTED THROUGH LABORATORY ACTIVITIES AND PRACTICAL TESTS OF THE USE OF GIS SOFTWARE
Prerequisites
IT IS USEFUL AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS AND METHODS OF GEOGRAPHY AND PARTICULARLY OF THE METHODS OF TREATMENT AND MAPPING OF SPATIAL DATA. BASIC KNOWLEDGES OF STATISTICS AND COMPUTER SKILLS ARE ALSO USEFUL.

INTRODUCTION TO GIS. STATISTICS AS SUPPORT TO THE TERRITORIAL ANALYSIS THE CHOICE OF DATA-SOURCES AND TREATMENT METHODS OF SPATIAL INFORMATION. TECHNICAL CARTOGRAPHY AND THEMATIC CARTOGRAPHY. THE DIGITIZATION AND GEO-REFERENCED SPATIAL DATA. VECTOR AND RASTER FORMAT. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE DATABASE AND THE MODEL E / R. GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS IN A GIS ENVIRONMENT. THE MAIN AREAS OF APPLICATION AND RESEARCH. EXAMPLES OF GIS APPLICATIONS
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 40 HOURS OF COMPULSORY LESSONS (20 LESSONS OF 2 HOURS), WITH 20 HOURS OF LECTURES AND 20 HOURS OF LAB. THERE WILL ALSO BE 10 HOURS OPTIONAL INTENDED FOR LABORATORY ACTIVITIES.
Verification of learning
THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE EXERCISES AND ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED IN THE LABORATORY. THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST IN A WRITTEN TEST (TEST TO OPEN ANSWER AND EXERCISES), IN AN ELABORATE TO BE DEVELOPED IN THE LABORATORY (PRODUCTION OF A THEMATIC MAP WITH QUANTUMGIS) AND AN OPTIONAL ORAL INTEGRATION.
