THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE TOOLS FOR A DIACHRONIC AND MULTIFACTORIAL ANALYSIS OF THE PROCESSES THAT HAVE MARKED THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC HISTORY IN THE LONG PERIOD AND IN A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE STUDENT MUST UNDERSTAND AND CONNECT THE HISTORICAL PHENOMENA IN BOTH CONTEXTS OF ECONOMIC SCIENCE AND HISTORICAL NARRATIVE, TAKING ACCOUNT OF THE DIFFERENT HISTORIOGRAPHICAL PARADIGMS. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE STUDENT MUST KNOW AND APPLY THE ECONOMIC THEORY FOR THE INTERPRETATION OF THE HISTORICAL PHENOMENA; HE MUST KNOW HOW TO READ THE HISTORICAL DATA WITH CRITIC ATTITUDE; HE MUST SUCCEED IN DISTINCTION AND EVALUATION OF THE DIFFERENT HISTORIOGRAPHICAL APPROACHES. INDEPENDENCE OF JUDGEMENT: THE STUDENT MUST SHOW INDEPENDENCE OF JUDGEMENT IN THE OPEN DEBATE THAT INVOLVES, DURING THE COURSE, TEACHER AND STUDENTS. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: THE STUDENT MUST SHOW TO KNOW THE TECHNICAL LANGUAGE OF THE ECONOMIC HISTORIANS AND TO USE IT CLEARLY. LEARNING SKILLS: THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO INSERT THE ACQUIRED CONCEPTS IN A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY AND UP TO DATE STUDY'S FRAMEWORK. |

THE COURSE AIMS TO EXPLORE THE BASIC MECHANISMS OF THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC SYSTEM BEFORE AND AFTER THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION FOCUSING ON THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS AND INSTITUTIONS IN ALLOWING A MORE EFFICIENT USE OF THE FACTORS OF PRODUCTION IN THE LONG TERM. IN PARTICULAR WILL BE DISCUSSED: DIVISION OF LABOUR, TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS AND EFFICIENCY OF MARKETS, THE MALTHUSIAN GROWTH THEORY AND THE DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION; INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, INDUSTRIAL ENLIGHTENMENT AND INDUSTRIOUS REVOLUTION; TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND CONVERGENCE; MONEY, FINANCIAL MARKETS AND THE BANKING SYSTEM , INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND TRADE POLICY IN RELATION TO ECONOMIC GROWTH; SCHEMES INTERNATIONAL MONETARY; THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE MINIMAL STATE AND OF THE WELFARE STATE; INEQUALITY AND INCOME DISTRIBUTION; STAGES OF GLOBALIZATION |
