THROUGHOUT THE ANALYSIS OF POLITICAL, INSTITUTIONAL, ECONOMICAL AND SOCIO-CULTURAL DYNAMICS, THE COURSE INTENDS TO DEEPEN THE OVERALL HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ENCOURAGING FURTHER REFLECTION ON THE REASONS, THAT HISTORICALLY LED THE FORMER BRITISH NORTHERN AMERICAN COLONIES TO BECOME THE MOST POWERFUL NATION IN THE WORLD DURING THE LAST CENTURY. FURTHERMORE, THE COURSE AIMS TO FOCUS ON THE POST-COLD WAR YEARS, AND NAMELY ON THE DEBATE WITHIN THE UNITED STATES ON THE TRANSFORMATIONS OCCURRED TO THE AMERICAN LEADERSHIP AFTER 1989. SIMULTANEOUSLY, IT WILL BE ALSO ANALYZED THE MAIN TRENDS IN CANADIAN HISTORY, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE US-CANADA RELATIONS. |

GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF CONTEMPORARY HISTORY RESULTS TO BE DEEPLY USEFUL; WHILE, IT IS ALSO PREFERRED AN EVEN BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE, SINCE ENGLISH TEXTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE READ AND DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE. |

FIRST PART: - AMERICAN REVOLUTION, INDEPENDENCE, AND THE FIRST PARTY SYSTEM; - FROM THE EARLY REPUBLIC TO CIVIL WAR: SOCIAL TROUBLES AND EXPANSION; - INDUSTRIAL GROWTH AND THE BEGINNING OF THE “EMPIRE” BETWEEN 19TH AND 20TH CANTURY; - THE “AMERICAN CANTURY”: U.S: GLOBAL LEADERSHIP; - AFTER THE COLD WAR. SECOND PART: - CANADA AND ITS MAIN HISTORICAL FACTS; - US-CANADA RELATIONS. THIRD PART. FOCUS: - U.S. FOREIGN POLICY AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR; - KISSINGER AND “KISSINGERISM”. |

EXPECTED LEARNING TARGETS: KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE MAIN FACTS RELATED TO DIFFERENT HISTORICAL PHASES, WHICH ARE TREATED DURING THE COURSE; AND TO UNDERSTAND THEIR MEANING WITHIN THE OVERALL HISTORICAL TRENDS. ABILITY TO ADOPT KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS ABILITY TO FIND OUT RELEVANT ISSUES AND DYNAMICS OF U.S. AND CANADIAN HISTORY BY READING HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS, AS WELL AS BY ANALYZING ARTICLES AND ESSAYS; AND, NAMELY, THE MEANING OF THE WORD “EMPIRE”, FOREIGN AND COMMERCIAL POLICY, TRANS-ATLANTIC RELATIONS, CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC LINKS WITH EUROPE. PERSONAL JUDGEMENT BY THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS SHALL ACQUIRE THE ABILITY OF EVALUATING ACTUAL PHENOMENA AND BEHAVIORS RELATED TO THE UNITED STATES AND TO CANADA, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THEIR HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS, AND, THEREFORE, THEIR NATIONAL SPECIFICITIES. COMMUNICATION SKILLS ABILITY TO ILLUSTRATE THE MAIN FACTS AND CHARACTERS OF U.S. HISTORY THROUGH THE USE OF APPROPRIATE HISTORIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS. LEARNING SKILLS ABILITY TO LINK SPECIFIC SKILLS RELATED TO THE HISTORY OF NORTH AMERICA, AND THOSE SKILLS LEARNED DURING ANOTHER COURSES, LIKE HISTORY OF AFRICAN AND ASIAN COUNTRIES, HISTORY OF SOUTHERN ITALY, OR EUROPEAN HISTORY. |
