Objectives
1. TO HELP LEARNERS TO IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE SKILLS IN ENGLISH DEVELOPING UPPER-INTERMEDIATE LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE (AT LEAST LEVEL B1 OF THE EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES DESIGNED BY THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE).
2. TO OFFER STUDENTS THE TOOLS OF PRAGMATICS, SOCIOLINGUISTICS AND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS FOR A CRITICAL APPROACH TO LANGUAGE, ISSUES AND SPECIALIZED TEXTS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO MEDIA AND POLITICAL LANGUAGE.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND USE SELF-CONFIDENTLY EVERYDAY EXPRESSIONS AND SPECIALIZED LANGUAGE RELATED TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND EDUCATIONAL, SEMI-SPECIALIZED AND SPECIALIZED TEXTS ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE, ENGLISH LINGUISTICS AND SPECIALIZED ENGLISH LANGUAGES.

MAKING JUDGMENTS:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO COLLECT, UNDERSTAND AND DEVELOP LANGUAGE INFORMATION IN ORDER TO EXPRESS THEIR OWN OPINIONS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE INFORMATION, IDEAS, PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS IN A WELL-SPOKEN MANNER.

LEARNING SKILLS:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERTAKE AUTONOMOUSLY A FURTHER LEVEL OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDIES.

THE MODULE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS I IS INTRODUCTORY.
Contents
LESSONS AND SPECIALIZED SEMINARS WILL DEAL WITH SOCIOLINGUISTIC, POLITICAL AND GEOPOLITICAL CURRENT ISSUES, WITH REFERENCE TO THE EUROPEAN UNION, THE UNITED KINGDOM, THE UNITED STATES AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO MEDIA DISCOURSE.
WRITING ACTIVITIES WILL BE OFFERED.
