Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF CULTURAL PROCESSES, PROVIDING THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED FOR EXPLORING THE EXTENSIVE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL DEBATE WITHIN THE DISCIPLINE.

IN PARTICULAR, IT IS EXPECTED THAT STUDENTS:
- DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE EXTENSIVE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL DEBATE WITHIN THE DISCIPLINE;
- CAN APPLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING IN THE ANALYSIS OF CULTURAL PROCESSES OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY;
- HAVE THE ABILITY TO INTERPRET AND USE AUTONOMOUSLY CATEGORIES AND THEORETICAL APPROACHES CENTRAL TO THE ANALYSIS OF CULTURAL PROCESSES IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY;
- CAN COMMUNICATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND CONCLUSIONS TO SPECIALIST AND NON-SPECIALIST AUDIENCES;
- HAVE DEVELOPED THOSE LEARNING SKILLS THAT ARE NECESSARY TO UNDERTAKE FURTHER STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CULTURE AND SOCIETY.

THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED IN TWO SECTIONS:

A – SOCIOLOGY AND THE STUDY OF CULTURAL PROCESSES
IN THE FIRST SECTION, AFTER OUTLINING THE MEANINGS INVOLVED IN THE CONCEPT OF "CULTURE", A SURVEY OF ANALYTICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES OF THE DISCIPLINE WILL BE PRESENTED, TOGETHER WITH CONCEPTS AND ISSUES OF MOST SIGNIFICANCE IN CONTEMPORARY DEBATE.

B - YOUTH CULTURE AND CULTURAL CHANGE
IN THE SECOND SECTION, MAJOR ANALYTICAL PERSPECTIVES OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOUTH CULTURES AND CULTURAL CHANGE WILL BE DISCUSSED. SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF: THE CHICAGO SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY, KARL MANNHEIM, TALCOTT PARSONS AND STRUCTURAL-FUNCTIONALISM, RADICAL SOCIOLOGY, THE BIRMINGHAM SCHOOL, AS WELL AS TO SEVERAL CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES.

FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING AND SEMINARS
Verification of learning
STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED BY AN ORAL EXAMINATION. THE ASSESSMENT CRITERIA WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT:
- KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL DEBATE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE AND WITHIN THE SUGGESTED LITERATURE;
- COMPETENCES IN OBSERVING, DESCRIBING AND INTERPRETING CULTURAL PROCESSES IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY;
- AUTONOMOUS AND CRITICAL ANALYSIS AND ARGUMENTATION;
- THE ABILITY IN BRINGING TOGETHER AND COMPARING DIFFERENT THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS;
- THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE CLEARLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE.
