Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO TAKE STUDENTS ON A JOURNEY OF KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE HISTORY OF REPUBLICAN ITALY. PLACED ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE, THEY WILL BE IDENTIFIED THE SALIENT FEATURES OF THE POST WORLD WAR II, THE BIRTH OF THE NEW STATE, THE POLITICAL STRUGGLE, ECONOMIC CHOICES, THE CHARACTER OF ITALIAN SOCIETY. IT ALSO WILL HIGHLIGHT THE ESSENTIAL ASPECTS OF THE GREAT TRANSFORMATION THAT IS WROUGHT IN THE YEARS OF “ECONOMIC MIRACLE”; WE WILL FOLLOW, THEN, THE LINES OF COLLECTIVE ACTION AT THE TURN OF THE SIXTIES AND THE SEVENTIES, FROM THE STUDENT MOVEMENT TO THAT OF THE WORKERS , THE RESPONSES OF THE POLITICAL CLASS AND THE SOCIAL CHANGE IN A PROCESS ESSENTIAL TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF OUR PRESENT.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS MUST KNOW IN BROAD TERMS ITALIAN, EUROPEAN AND WORLD HISTORY OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY UNTIL WORLD WAR II.
Contents
THE COURSE WILL ANALYZE THE ESSENTIAL FEATURES OF THE BIRTH OF THE ITALIAN REPUBLIC, THE “LONG POSTWAR PERIOD”, MARKED BY NEW ECONOMIC, POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ISSUES; FOLLOWING THE FORMATION OF THE NEW STATE, WE WILL TRY TO CAPTURE THE INTERTWINING OF IDENTITY AND TRANSFORMATION OF THE POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL LIFE OF THE COUNTRY. IN ADDITION, FOLLOWING THE EVENTS THAT MARKED THE POLITICAL-ECONOMIC WORLD AND CIVIL SOCIETY IN ITALY FROM THE CRISIS OF CENTRISM TO THE CENTER-LEFT GOVERNMENT, WE WILL DRAW THE LINES OF THE GREAT TRANSFORMATION THAT IS WROUGHT IN THE YEARS OF “ECONOMIC MIRACLE”, AND THE SUDDEN AND UNBALANCED MODERNIZATION OF THE COUNTRY IN THOSE YEARS. FINALLY, WE WILL INTRODUCE POLITICAL-ECONOMIC LIFE AND THE ITALIAN SOCIETY IN THE YEARS OF PROTEST, OF THE STUDENT REVOLT AND WORKERS’ STRUGGLES, TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE PROFOUND CHANGES THAT MARKED, AT ALL LEVELS, THE ITALIAN REALITY.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE WILL COMPLEMENT THE CLASSROOM TEACHING WITH A SERIES OF EFFORTS BY STUDENTS ON SPECIFIC ISSUES THROUGH GROUP WORK WHERE THE END PRODUCT IS A WRITTEN PAPER.

IN ADDITION TO THE ASSESSMENT OF STUDENTS’ PAPERS, INTERCOURSE TESTS ARE SCHEDULED.
