Objectives
THE COURSE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE EMPIRICAL RESEARCH (QUANTITATIVE APPROACH) IN SOCIAL SCIENCES.

IN PARTICULAR, AFTER AN ARTICULATED HISTORICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL RECONSTRUCTION OF THE CONCEPTS OF “BEHAVIOUR”, “OPINION” AND “VALUE”; THE COURSE EXAMINES THE TOOLS MORE WELL KNOWN AND USED TO SURVEY OF BEHAVIOURS AND OPINIONS.

DURING THE COURSE WE WILL REFER TO SOME EXAMPLES PICKED UP FROM SEVERAL QUANTITATIVE RESEARCHES ABOUT VALUES AND BEHAVIOURS OF YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADOLESCENTS.

AT THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE:

- A ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF THE DEFINITION AND OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF SCALES TO SURVEY OPINIONS AND BEHAVIOURS;
- THE SKILL TO VALUATE SCALES IN ORDER TO SURVEY OF OPINIONS AND BEHAVIOURS USED BY OTHER SCHOLARS;
- THE SKILL TO BUILD SYNTHETIC INDICES STARTING BY USED SCALES;
- THE SKILL TO ELABORATE RESEARCH RELATIONSHIPS IN ORDER TO PRESENT DATA USING GRAPHIC AND TABULAR FORMATS;
- THE SKILL TO INDEPENDENTLY INTERPRET INFORMATION COLLECTED, ELABORATED AND ANALYSED;
- THE SKILL TO COMMUNICATE THE RESULTS ACHIEVED CLEARLY AND CONSCIOUSLY BY APPLYING THE SCALING TECHNIQUES;
- THE NECESSARY SKILLS TO LEARN HOW TO UNDERTAKE INDEPENDENTLY OTHER STUDIES IN THE EMPIRICAL RESEARCH FIELD;

THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO 2 MODULES OF 20 HOURS (6 CREDITS). IN THE SECOND MODULE THERE WILL BE BRIEF RESEARCH ITINERARIES AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES.

IN THE FIRST MODULE WE WILL DESCRIBE THE MOST IMPORTANT SCALING TECHNIQUES AND WE WILL ANALYSE THE BASIC ELEMENTS IN THE BUILDING OF TECHNIQUES.

IN THE SECOND MODULE WE WILL EVALUATE THE VALIDITY AND THE RELIABILITY OF EACH SCALE COMPARED TO THE COGNITIVE PURPOSES OF THE RESEARCH. MOREOVER, THROUGH THE LABORATORY ACTIVITIES, WE WILL BUILD A SERIES OF SCALES AND WE WILL OBSERVE THE MAIN ELEMENTS OF DISTORTION. THE LATTER ARE IN EACH SCALE THAT WE USED.
Teaching Methods
THE DIDACTIC METHODS ARE BASED ON FRONTAL CLASSES, TRAINING AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES.

THE LATTER REGARD THE BUILDING OF A RESEARCH DESIGN: FROM THE STEP DEDICATED TO THE ANALYSIS TOOL TO THE STEP DEDICATED TO COLLECTING DATA; FROM THE STEP DEDICATED TO THE DATA ELABORATION TO THE STEP DEDICATED TO THE ANALYSIS AND THE PRESENTATION OF DATA.
Verification of learning
THE EVALUATION OF LEARNING PROCESS WILL FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

- DURING THE COURSE, THROUGH THE WRITING OF BRIEF REPORTS, WE WILL EVALUATE THE CAPABILITY LEVEL TO BUILD THE SURVEY TOOLS AND THE CAPABILITY LEVEL TO ELABORATE THE COLLECTED DATA;

- DURING THE FINAL EVALUATION, THROUGH A WRITING TEST (MULTIPLE RESPONSE) AND AN ORAL EXAMINATION, WE WILL EVALUATE THE SPECIFIC SKILLS THAT STUDENTS REACHED DURING THE COURSE AND ALSO THE ORAL AND ARGUMENTATIVE SKILLS OF STUDENTS.
