Objectives
AIMS
THE COURSE AIMS ARE: TO PROVIDE BASIC KNOWLEDGES FOR THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A STATISTICAL SURVEY STARTING FROM THE PRESENTATION OF THE MAIN SAMPLING DESIGNS, PROBABILISTIC AND NON-PROBABILISTIC, ACQUIRING THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE THEORY OF THE SAMPLES AND THE ESTIMATION METHODS OF THE POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS; TO REPEAT THE PHASES OF THE SURVEY, FOCUSING ON THE CHOICE OF THE SAMPLING STRATEGY SUITABLE TO THE STUDY OF THE SOCIAL PHENOMENA UNDER ANALYSIS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO REALIZE SAMPLING SURVEYS USING THE MAIN SAMPLES DESIGNS TO THE STUDY OF SOCIAL PHENOMENA IN REAL CONTEXTS, BY APPRECIATING THE ADVANTAGES DERIVING FROM THE USE OF STATISTICAL METHODS FOR DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS IN DIFFERENT APPLICATION FIELDS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DESIGN A STATISTICAL SURVEY, FROM THE FORMULATION OF THE THEORETICAL PROBLEM AND THE RESEARCH HYPOTHESES TO THE CHOICE OF THE SAMPLING DESIGN SUITABLE FOR THE STUDY OF THE PHENOMENON UNDER ANALYSIS, UNTIL THE PHASE OF DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS.
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO ELABORATE A RESEARCH REPORT USING A STATISTICAL SOFTWARE ON REAL DATA SET AND TO INTERPRET THE RESULTS IN A CRITICAL AND ORIGINAL MANNER.

THE COURSE FOCUSES ON THE DESIGN OF STATISTICAL SURVEYS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL PHENOMENA AND ITS APPLICATIONS IN DIFFERENT FIELDS.

IT ADDRESSES THE TOPICS RELATED TO:
POPULATION AND SAMPLE, CENSUS SURVEYS AND SAMPLE SURVEYS, ORIGINS OF SURVEYS AND OPINION POLLS, STEPS TO COLLECT DATA IN A SAMPLE SURVEY, PROBABILITY SAMPLING (SIMPLE RANDOM SAMPLING WITH REPETITION AND WITHOUT REPETITION, SYSTEMATIC SAMPLING, STRATIFIED RANDOM SAMPLING, CLUSTER SAMPLING), THE ESTIMATION OF SAMPLE SIZE, NON-PROBABILITY SAMPLING DESIGNS, SOURCES OF THE ERRORS IN SURVEYS.

EXAMPLES OF SAMPLING DESIGNS DEFINED TO STUDY SOCIAL PHENOMENA WILL BE PROVIDED AND LABORATORY EXERCISES WILL BE CONDUCTED THROUGH THE USE OF STATISTICAL SOFTWARE.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 40 HOURS AND INCLUDES CLASSROOM LECTURES, CLASSROOM EXERCISES AND LABORATORY SESSIONS
Verification of learning
THE EXAM IS DEEMED TO BE PASSED SUCCESSFULLY IF THE FINAL GRADE IS EQUAL TO OR HIGHER THAN 18/30. IN THE EVENT OF A FULL GRADE (30/30), THE EXAMINATION BOARD MAY GRANT HONOURS (LODE).

THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS: A WRITTEN TEST, OR IN ALTERNATIVE A PROJECT WORK, AND AN ORAL INTERVIEW.

THE WRITTEN TEST OR THE PROJECT WORK AIM AT ASSESSING THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND THE ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS.
THE WRITTEN TEST TAKES ABOUT 90 MINUTES AND IT IS STRUCTURED IN EXERCISES ABOUT THE TOPICS DEVELOPED DURING THE COURSE.
THE PROJECT WORK CONSISTS OF A TECHNICAL REPORT WITH THE COLLECTION AND THE ANALYSIS OF REAL DATA SET ON A SOCIAL PHENOMENON UNDER ANALYSIS.

THE ORAL INTERVIEW TAKES ABOUT 20 MINUTES WITH A DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL TOPICS PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND THE ABILITY AND THE QUALITY OF ORAL EXPOSITION.
