Objectives
Educational aims
Teaching develops basic skills in the knowledge of contemporary history; it also aims to enable students to apply this knowledge in the reading and critical interpretation of historiographic texts or topical essays, and in the extension of reports and reports on specific topics.

Knowledge and understanding
We want students to demonstrate that they have acquired knowledge of the basic disciplines in the area of contemporary history, who know how to deal with a historiographical research from secondary sources.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Students will have to demonstrate that they have adequate skills to argue theses in the field of applied social-historical research, including through participation in workshop activities and study seminars.
Prerequisites
IT IS PREFERRED AN EVEN BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS ANALYZED DURING THE COURSE; AND, MOREOVER, IT RESULTS DEEPLY USEFUL A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF MODERN HISTORY.

FIRST PART:
- RESTORATION;
- LIBERAL UPRISINGS;
- 1848 IN EUROPE;
- ITALIAN UNIFICATION;
- GERMAN UNIFICATION AND BISMARCK’ ORDER;
- COLONIALISM AND IMPERIALISM;
- ITALY: THE AFTERMATH OF UNIFICATION;
- ITALY: THE END OF XIX CENTURY AND GIOLITTI;
- INTERNATIONAL CRISIS AT THE BEGINNINGS OF XX CENTURY.

SECOND PART:
- FIRST WORLD WAR;
- FIRST POSTWAR IN EUROPE;
- FIRST POSTWAR IN ITALY;
- FASCISM: ORIGIN, GROWTH AND CONSOLIDATION;
- GERMANY: FROM REPUBLIC TO NAZISM;
- CRISIS OF 1929: UNITED STATES AND EUROPE IN RECESSION;
- THIRTIES: THE END OF EUROPEAN DEMOCRACY;
- SECOND WORLD WAR;
- ITALY: THE FALL OF FASCISM.

THIRD PART:
- SECOND WORLD WAR: THE AFTERMATH;
- COLD WAR AND CONTAINMENT;
- ITALY: THE BIRTH OF THE REPUBLIC AND THE YEARS OF “CENTRISM”;
- ITALY: FROM “CENTER-LEFT” TO THE SEVENTIES;
- ITALY: THE CRISIS OF THE FIRST REPUBLIC;
- ITALY: THE SECOND REPUBLIC AFTER TANGENTOPOLI;
- COLD WAR: AFTER STALIN;
- COLD WAR: THE FALL OF USSR;
- EUROPE: CONTINENTAL INTEGRATION;
- THE INTERNATIONAL SCENARIO AFTER 1989;
- 9/11 AND ITS AFTERMATH.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS COMPOSED OF 60 HOURS OF FRONTAL LESSONS, SOME OF WHICH (NOT MORE THAN 8 HOURS) WILL BE GIVEN AS SEMINAR SESSIONS ON SPECIFIC TOPICS.
OTHER DIDACTIC SUPORTS WILL BE GIVEN DURING THE COURSE TO THE ATTENDING STUDENTS.
Verification of learning
THE EVALUATION WILL TAKE PLACE BY AN ORAL FINAL TEST, FINALIZED TO CHECK THE HISTORICAL METHOD AND THE CAPACITY TO INDIVIDUALIZE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EVENTS AND LONG-TERM PROCESSES.
