Objectives
EDUCATIONAL AIMS
THE COURSE AIMS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES, PROVIDING THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NECESSARY FOR EXPLORING THE EXTENSIVE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL DEBATE.
THE COURSE ALSO AIMS TO OFFER THE CHANCE OF DEVELOPING THE SKILLS FOR USING THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO THE ANALYSIS OF CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
STUDENTS SHOULD ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN PERSPECTIVES OF ANALYSIS AND KEY CONCEPTS OF THE DISCIPLINE, AS WELL AS SKILLS THAT ALLOW THEM TO ELABORATE CORRECT INTERPRETATIONS AND ORIGINAL IDEAS.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
STUDENTS SHOULD ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO APPLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO THE ANALYSIS OF CONTEMPORARY EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL PROCESSES, FOR THE PURPOSE OF DESCRIBING, INTERPRETING, GIVING ACCOUNT AND PREVENTING THEIRS TRENDING LINES. STUDENTS SHOULD ALSO ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO PROJECT, ORGANIZE AND MANAGE INFORMATION AND DATABASE CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES.

IN THE FIRST SECTION, AFTER OUTLINING THE MEANINGS INVOLVED IN THE CONCEPT OF “CULTURE”, A REVIEW OF ANALYTICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES OF THE DISCIPLINE WILL BE PRESENTED, TOGETHER WITH CONCEPTS AND ISSUES OF MOST SIGNIFICANCE IN CONTEMPORARY DEBATE.

IN THE SECOND SECTION THE CHANGING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EDUCATION AND SOCIETY WILL BE EXPLORED, PAYING SPECIFIC ATTENTION TO ISSUES SUCH AS: EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY, MULTICULTURALISM, EDUCATIONAL PATHS AND SOCIALISATION AGENCIES.

A SPECIFIC ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO KARL MANNHEIM'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF CULTURAL CHANGE, EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES AND THE "PROBLEM OF GENERATIONS"
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 60 HOURS OF CLASS INSTRUCTION.
DURING LECTURES, THE PRESENTATION OF CONTENTS WILL BE SUPPORTED BY EXAMPLES AND CASE STUDY ILLUSTRATIONS.
Verification of learning
STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED DURING THE FINAL EXAMINATION THAT WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE BASIS OF THE CALENDAR DEFINED BY THE DEPARTMENT.
INTERMEDIATE TESTS ARE NOT FORESEEN. THE EXAM CONSISTS ON A FINAL ORAL TEST, AIMED AT EVALUATING THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS.
THE GRADE WILL BE EXPRESSED IN A SCALE RANGING FROM 18 TO 30, WITH POSSIBLE MARKS. THE GRADING IS ATTRIBUTED TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE FOLLOWING DIMENSIONS: KNOWLEDGE OF CONTENTS, ADEQUACY OF THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL REFERENCES, ABILITY TO PROPOSE COHERENT EXEMPLIFICATIONS, CLARITY OF THE ARGUMENT, LANGUAGE PROPERTY.
