Objectives
LEARNING GOALS:
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE BASIC QUANTITAIVE TOOLS WHICH ALLOW TO DESCRIBE AND ANALYZE DATA FROM UNIVARIATE AND BIVARIATE CENSUS AND SAMPLE SURVEY.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
- STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE FUNDAMENTAL METHODS AND TECHNIQUES FOR DATA TREATMENT AND ANALYSIS OF CENSUS AND SAMPLE SURVEYS.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
- STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE SKILLS AND OPERATIONAL PRACTICES RELATED TO THE TREATMENT, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF SOCIAL PHENOMENA;
- STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO ORGANIZE AND MANAGE STATISTICAL DATASETS WITH HETEROGENOUS DATA

MODULE 1: DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS (20 HOURS)
DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTIVE PHENOMENA. POPULATION AND SAMPLE. THE STATISTICAL DATA. QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE VARIABLES. THE STATISTICAL TABLES. THE GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATIONS. THE FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS. THE AVERAGE VALUES. THE VARIABILITY.
BIVARIATE ANALYSIS FOR QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DATA. CONTINGENCY TABLES. CHI-SQUARE ASSOCIATION TEST. LINEAR CORRELATION. LINEAR REGRESSION MODEL.

MODULE 2: ELEMENTS OF PROBABILITY (20 HOURS)
DEFINITION OF PROBABILISTIC MODEL. BERNOULLI MODEL. DEFINITION OF RANDOM VARIABLE. DISCRETE AND CONTINUE RANDOM VARIABLES. DEFINITION OF DENSITY FUNCTION. EXPECTED VALUE AND VARIANCE OF A RANDOM VARIABLE. BINOMIAL RANDOM VARIABLE AND NORMAL RANDOM VARIABLE. CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM. DEFINITION OF STATISTICS. DISTRIBUTION OF A SAMPLE STATISTICS. MEDIA AND VARIANCE OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF MEDIA AND SAMPLE PROPORTION.

MODULE 3: ELEMENTS OF INFERENCE (20 HOURS)
POINT ESTIMATES AND CONFIDENCE INTERVAL FOR PROPORTION AND MEAN. TEST FOR MEAN AND PROPORTION. THE CHI-SQUARE TEST FOR INDEPENDENCE.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 60 HOURS OF CLASSROOM TEACHING DIVIDED INTO FRONTAL LESSONS AND EXERCITATIONS
Verification of learning
INTERCOURSE LEARNING TESTS FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS. THE FINAL EXAM INCLUDES A WRITTEN TEST FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF PRACTICAL SKILLS AND AN ORAL TEST FOR THE CRITICAL DISCUSSION OF THEORETICAL ASPECTS. ALL THE STUDENTS THAT CARRY OUT THE WRITTEN TEST ARE HOWEVER ADMITTED TO THE ORAL TEST.
THE WRITTEN TEST CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL EXERCISES OF 90 MINUTES DIFFERENTIATED FOR THE THREE MODULES OF THE COURSE.
THE STUDENTS WHO SUCCESSFULLY PASS THE INTER-COURSE TESTS OF THE I AND/OR II MODULES WILL TAKE THE WRITTEN TEST ONLY ON THE REMAINING MODULES.
THE PASSING OF THE TEST IS ACQUIRED BY DEMONSTRATING THE ABILITY 'PRACTICE IN THE CORRECT DEVELOPMENT OF AT LEAST HALF' OF THE EXERCISES PROPOSED IN THE WRITTEN TEST AND THE ABILITY 'TO DISCUSS WITH PROPERTY' LANGUAGE TYPICAL OF THE DISCIPLINE.
