THE GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES IS TO PROVIDE CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE ON THE BIRTH OF ICONOLOGICAL STUDIES IN EUROPE AND THEIR RECEPTION IN ITALY, IDENTIFYING THE MEANING AND DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE EXAMINATION OF THE THOUGHT OF THE FOUNDERS (WARBURG, SAXL, CASSIRER, PANOFSKY, GOMBRICH) AND TO ORIENT THE STUDENTS' TRAINING ON THE IMPORTANCE OF LITERARY THEMES FOR THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF ARTISTIC AND SYMBOLIC REPRESENTATIONS OVER THE CENTURIES, IN THE ITALIAN AND EUROPEAN CONTEXT. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE STUDENT: - WILL LEARN THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE DISCIPLINE OF ICONOLOGY (WARBURG, PANOFSKY, CASSIRER, SAXL, GOMBRICH); - WILL ACQUIRE THE FUNDAMENTAL CRITICAL TOOLS AND METHODS FOR ICONOGRAPHIC INTERPRETATION AND HISTORICAL-ICONOGRAPHIC CONTEXTUALISATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF HISTORIOGRAPHIC THOUGHT; - WILL UNDERSTAND THE INTERDISCIPLINARY RELATIONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT FIELDS OF STUDY AND THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN LITERARY TEXTS AND PICTORIAL PRODUCTION. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: - THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO DEAL WITH IN-DEPTH COURSES IN ART HISTORY AND BE ABLE TO TRANSMIT THE ACQUIRED CONTENTS CONTEXTUALISING THEM WITH COHERENCE AND OBSERVATION SKILLS. MAKING JUDGMENTS: - THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO EVALUATE THE ORIGIN OF THE ICONOGRAPHIES AND RELATE THEM TO THE CULTURAL CONTEXTS THEY BELONG TO. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO HOLD CONVERSATIONS ON ICONOLOGICAL AND ICONOGRAPHIC THEMES WITH APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY LEARNING SKILLS: THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND COMPLEX FIGURATIVE COMPOSITIONS AND TEXTS, IDENTIFYING BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES. |

DURING THE COURSE (FOR A TOTAL OF 45 HOURS OF FRONTAL AND THEORETICAL LESSONS) THE FUNDAMENTAL ICONOGRAPHIC AND ICONOLOGICAL STUDIES OF THE EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY WILL BE EXAMINED, IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DISCIPLINE, THANKS TO THE CONTRIBUTION OF GERMAN AND ENGLISH SCHOLARS AND THE HISTORIOGRAPHIC RECEPTION BETWEEN EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES. IN PARTICULAR WE WILL DEAL WITH ABY WARBURG AND THE ICONOLOGICAL METHOD, THE METHODOLOGY OF ERWIN PANOFSKI AND THE DEVELOPMENTS OF ICONOLOGICAL THOUGHT AROUND THE WARBURG INSTITUTE. |

DURING THE LESSONS AND DURING THE FINAL EXAM LL BE ASSESSED THE STUDENTS' ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE CLEARLY THE METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE. IN PARTICULAR, QUESTIONS WILL CONCERN THE TOPICS EXPLAINED DURING THE COURSE (THE PROPER KNOWLEDGE WILL WEIGH 50% OF THE TOTAL VOTE), THE SOURCES AND THE BIBLIOGRAPHY RECOMMENDED FOR PREPARING THE EXAM (THE PROPER KNOWLEDGE WILL WEIGH 50% OF THE TOTAL VOTE). THE FINAL VOTE, OUT OF THIRTY WITH POSSIBLE PRAISE, IS BASED ON THE CAPACITY OF THE STUDENT TO PRESENT THE DIFFERENT TOPICS IN A SYNTHETIC AND COMPLETE MANNER |
