Curricular Internship

Biologia Curricular Internship

What are Curricular Internships

Curricular internships are experiences undertaken by students during their course of study and are aimed at completing their training through practical activities in facilities either internal or external to the University. The internship involves the acquisition of University Educational Credits (CFU), as required by the curricula of individual degree programmes. Students are encouraged to consult the university’s webpage dedicated to curricular internships for further guidelines.

Specifically, the educational programme of the Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences includes a compulsory training internship worth 10 CFU (250 hours), which must be carried out after reaching the minimum threshold of 5 successfully passed exams – in companies or external institutions with a signed agreement, or in internal laboratories of the Department of Chemistry and Biology 'A. Zambelli'. The internship coordinator is prof. Maria Vivo (mvivo@unisa.it).

Assignment and Conduct of Curricular Internship in Biology

Students who meet the requirements to submit an internship request must:

  • Fill in the Internship Request Form (see attachment) completely, including:
  • The site of internship activities, either a university research laboratory (internal internship) or a partner company (external internship*).
  • The name of the internal supervisor, chosen from among the teaching staff of the relevant Teaching Board (mandatory for both internal and external internships).
  • The name of the external supervisor, if necessary.
  • The internship objectives

* External Internship: If the student chooses an external facility, the internship is defined as an 'external internship'. The Training Project must then include the name and signature of an external supervisor (see regulations) and be counter-signed by the internal supervisor. The internship site may be selected from the List of Partner Companies. If the chosen company is not on the list, students may propose the activation of a new agreement (see instructions below).

  • Attach the certificate of completion of the 'Basic Course on Workplace Safety'. To access and attend the course, students must log in to their university web area (user area – ESSE3) using their credentials and access the link: https://unisa.sgslweb.com/sso. The course ends with a multiple-choice test to assess knowledge.
  • Submit the Training Project completed and signed by the student, the company (institutional representative and external supervisor), and the internal supervisor, to the Student Careers Office by opening a ticket on https://hd.unisa.it/ at least 15 days prior to the start of the internship, to allow for administrative checks and authorization from the President of the Teaching Board.

Please note that students may not begin the internship until the Careers Office returns the Training Project, signed by the President of the Teaching Board, via email. The logbook must be completed by the student, detailing the hours worked, in order to meet all the requirements and obtain the CFU needed for the degree in Biology.

Conclusion of the Internship

At the end of the internship, the completed logbook must be signed by the external supervisor (if applicable) and/or the internal supervisor. The completed logbook must be submitted to the Careers Office via ticket. Graduating students must submit the logbook within 30 days of their graduation date.

Transitional Rules

Students must be aware of transitional rules, which may vary depending on the academic year cohort. Based on these rules, students from different cohorts may have slightly different requirements for applying for an internship.

Instructions for Establishing a New Agreement

If the company is not already partnered with the Department, a request must be initiated to establish a new agreement regulating the relationship between the University (as Promoting Body) and the organization or company (as Host Body). Organizations wishing to host students from the University of Salerno for curricular internships must sign a three-year agreement, defined as:

- Framework Agreement: if the organization intends to host students from degree programmes in different departments (e.g., Law and Management Engineering).

- Departmental Agreement: if the organization intends to host students from programmes belonging to the same department.

Organizations wishing to host students (whether on student initiative or not) must request the agreement by providing personal data, legal status, and internship opportunities by area of placement, according to the procedures detailed on the University website: https://web.unisa.it/didattica/tirocinio-curriculare. The company/organization must submit the 'Request for Agreement' form via certified email (PEC) to: ammicent@pec.unisa.it and CC: placement@unisa.it. The guidelines and forms are available at: https://web.unisa.it/didattica/tirocinio-curriculare/modulistica. After an initial assessment of the required criteria, the Right to Study Office / Placement Service forwards the request to the relevant university or departmental office, depending on the type of agreement.

  • The student, once informed of the outcome, must:
Contact the company and have them complete and sign the attached forms: internship agreement form (to be completed only; digital signatures will be collected after approval by the Department Council), Company information sheet
  • Contact a teaching staff member to act as internal supervisor (from the relevant Teaching Board) and complete and sign the attached 'Request for agreement by academic supervisor'.

All completed and signed documents must be sent via ticket or email to: carrierestudenti.dcb@unisa.it

Internships Safety regulations

To attend the internship activities, students and faculty members are reminded to read and comprehend the "DCB Safety and Risk Prevention Handbook" and the advice of the Laboratory Safety Delegate, as indicated in the "Safety Regulations Learning" form that needs to be signed before starting any laboratory activities (mandatory). The filled form has to be printed, signed by the trainee, and returned to the Laboratory Safety Delegate, who will sign it and transmit it to the teaching secretary's office for the signature of the Department Director and safety delegate.
