Students with disabilities and SLD (Specific Learning Difficulties)
Students with disabilities or SLD can benefit from a number of services offered by the Disabilities and Special Learning Needs Office, (Law 17/99 and 170/2010), part of the Students’ Right to Study Office coordinated by the Rector’s delegate for disabilities. The office guarantees individual face-to face or online interviews for students’ needs analysis; a team of experts informs and gives students advice on specific services available, on the possibility to receive support during entry tests and on economic advantages and easy access to the university areas. Margarita THEINER is the department coordinator of these services (itheiner@unisa.it).
Candidates with certification of disability, according to Law no. 104 of 1992, or with a diagnosis of SLD, according to Law 170 of 2010, can receive support during the entry test and benefit from balancing measures and means as well as additional time, prior to specific request. The use of any medical equipment requires authorization from the Students’ Right to Study Office. Universities are able to conditionally admit candidates with medical certificates to take the test, even if these are not updated due to limited NHS response, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and to postpone the presentation of the due documentation. Candidates’ SLD diagnosis cannot be older than three years or it should be issued after the candidates’ eighteenth’s birthday by the local health services or regional health service professionals. Candidates with disabilities or SLD have to send an e-mail to the Students’ Right to Study Office (dirstu@unisa.it) with a specific request of assistance including the relevant documentation within 15 days before the date of the test. The request form is downloadable from the following link: https://www.disabilidsa.unisa.it/servizi/modulistica

Fast track course pathway for language students
As part of the cooperation with language high schools, an investigational ‘fast track’ path for language students with a level of proficiency higher than the base one required for entry by the Bachelor’s degree course in Foreign Languages and Cultures has been implemented.
After passing the entry test, students who think to have this level of proficiency can register for a special exam session, usually scheduled in the last week of September (the exam dates will be available on the department website) to take the final first-year exam of the language course.
The first-year language course programmes are available on the Department website. The final exam includes the following parts:
- Written test
- Oral interview
To prepare for the examination, it is necessary to look at the course study programme.
In case of positive results of the examination, students will obtain the 9 ECTS for the course that will be registered once registration to the Bachelor’s degree is completed. Students will then be able to attend the second-year language course and take the related final examination afterwards (the related ECTS will be registered after enrolling in year two).
Students who possess a language certificate of a proficiency level as the one required for year one, can skip the first-year language exam and hand in a copy of that certificate. For further information go to https://www.dipsum.unisa.it/didattica/focus?id=108
Remedial courses to fulfil specific additional training obligations (OFA).
Contact person: prof.ssa Miriam Voghera
The remedial course in Italian Linguistics is compulsory for students who are in section B of the order of merit after taking the entry test for the Bachelor’s degree course and therefore, enrolled on the Bachelor’s degree course with specific additional training obligations.
The remedial course must be completed within the first year of the course. A final examination will assess whether the training obligations have been discharged, as an indispensable condition for taking the Bachelor’s degree exams in year one. Therefore, students who enrol below the standard educational level required will not be able to take exams until meeting the course requirements.
Educational goals
The remedial course aims to equip students with the necessary linguistic and syntactic competence to successfully attend the Bachelor’s degree courses.
The main areas of study are:
- understanding of different types of texts;
- building awareness of their syntactic structure.
Course structure
The course is divided in ten learning units that must be completed in order to pass the final activities present in each unit that provide access to the final exam.
Final exam
The final exam consists of two parts. Part one will be online and requires completion of a number of tests corresponding to the learning units in the course. Part two will be at University. The successful completion of part one is necessary to be admitted to part two of the exam. Students need to pass both parts to fulfil training obligations.
Learning units
All learning units include tasks and assignments divided in three parts:
- Texts
- Syntax
- Assessment test
- Texts
Each learning unit contains a text with a brief introduction. Students have to read the introduction containing reference to the relevant chapter of the book by G. Basile, A.R. Guerriero, S. Lubello, Competenze linguistiche per l’accesso all’Università, Roma, Carocci 2006. After reading the text carefully, students have to complete the comprehension activities. The aim is to provide students with practice in understanding texts: in case of incorrect answers, the comprehension activities can be repeated after reading the text again and studying the relevant book chapter.
- Syntax
In the same text from the previous section, there are some coloured words. Clicking on these words, boxes with syntactical comments appear including a link to the relevant paragraphs of the grammar book that can be useful in case students need to revise this part. The words with the same colour refer to the same grammatical point. After reading the comments, students have to complete grammar exercises to practice. In case of incorrect answers, the exercises can be filled again, after studying the relevant grammar point.
- Assessment test
In this section, students will be tested on the points contained in each unit. The assessment test contains reading comprehension activities and grammar exercises.
BEWARE: This time, there will be only one possibility to complete the exercise. Therefore, the test must be completed only when students feel they have reached an adequate level of proficiency. Students have to successfully complete at least 6 exercises for each unit to be admitted in the final assessment test and fulfil the training obligations.
